Even though autocross is slower in overall speed, the corners are smaller and require more inputs in less time. You also have to learn your line, brake zones, apexes, etc. a LOT quicker as you only get a few laps not 20 minute sessions.
I'm not very good at autocross.....I do better on the big track....while similar, its takes a very different driver to well in each..... Drifting is the same way....drift kids will go out of the big track and SUCK....sure they look cool sliding in the corners, but their lap times are dismal.... I've also found that typical autox courses tend to favor smaller cars...the 928 is awfully wide compared to typical good autox rides...but the extra width makes it better on the big track, since it lowers the center of gravity and allows for wider tires

The main difference between autocross and track is the momentum of speed.

The fastest way around a corner is the maintain a 4 wheel drift where the slip angle is between 7 and 15 degrees. The slip angle is the angle between the direction the tire is sliding versus the direction it is actually pointed. Too small an angle and you could be going faster. Too wide and the tires brake more than they turn the car (why drift kids drifting is slower).

In the smaller slower turns of the autocross the speed range needed to achieve and maintain the proper slip angle for a 4 wheel drift is narrower than the higher speed corners of the track. That makes it more difficult to get that fast lap at the autocross versus at the track.
