Default Threaded Plug for oil pressure sender

Hi.. first ever post. I've owned the car for four years and the oil pressure sender has never worked. My gage always read full pressure. I thought it might be the wires since they were frayed and corroded. Repairing the wires didn't help, so I decided to replace the sender unit. I removed the oil pressure sender and as many have experienced, the threaded plug came out with it. No problem, I'll just take it apart on the bench. But what I found is that there was no springs or thermostat at all. I looked up into the engine block to see if they were stuck inside, but no. So, do these parts have to be there for the oil pressure sender to operate properly? 1982 4.5 lt 5 speed.

Thanks,
Ray

the internal springs/thermostat etc are for those cars with oil coolers/hoses. I suspect you don't have the oil cooler. The sender unit is self contained and bolts to the bottom of the oil thermostat assembly as you have seen (it doesn't need the springs/thermostat to work).
another data point for 82 not having an oil cooler..

just a note: if the two wires on the sensor are reversed, the gauge will read full, have you tried this?

yes... first thing i tried. It appears the brown wire connects to "G" and the black to "WK" of the sender. There is also a green wire sticking out further up the orange covering that was not connected to anything. Looks like a ground wire. Should it be grounded somewhere?
