928 vs 944 Turbo

928 is not faster. Bolt-ons on a 928 vs bolt-ons on 951, 951 will win. I've had 6 modded 928's & 3 modded 951's.
944 is easier to drive, lighter to drive, less fatiguing to drive, though less "rewarding" to drive than the 928.

Stock for stock an S4+ 928 has a higher top speed than a 951 = "faster". A modded 928 with a 2.2 rear pinion will go faster (over 200mph with enough power), unless 951's have a custom gearbox that allows them to reach redline at a higher speed that I was not aware of? I don't recall any 951's in the 200mph club...
Oh, and where's that video of a 911, a 951 and an S4 drag racing?

I think at this level of vehicle, it's rather odd to be measuring the advantages or disadvantages of various cars vs another. They're all expensive, they're all faster than you can reasonably expect to drive on the street (you can't drive any of them at their limits for more than a few seconds at a time, anyway), and they're all, well, in my opinion, pleasing to the eye.
In short, you won't go wrong buying any of them. I bought the 928 because I knew I could fit in one comfortably, considering I'm six foot four and well, fat. Not to mention, I think it's one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. To me, the 944 just wouldn't make me smile as much every time I look at it. I was never a fan of extended flares on fenders, or added on spoilers and wings (I think the 924 looks way better than the 944, for example). The original 928 is simply a thing of beauty to me.

They're both great cars for different reasons, same as the 911 turbos, which is why I own all three: just no other option for me personally.

I have both. My 928 is the touring car and that is what it was made for, go in style. My 951 is a beast and can run circles around most cars. Granted, I have done many upgades to the 951 and that is what I use it for, speed. But when i want to cruise out to Montauk, I use the 928, very comfy to drive.

That video really does not say much at all. Fun to watch, sure!
Power is easy to have in a 951 and they don't just blow up like everyone is alluring to. (especially after you o-ring the head)......
I know people like or compare these cars becaue they are the same vintage. But there is a reason Porsche sold both at that time. They are completely different cars.
Like many in this thread I also own both! There is a reason so many in this thread own both, because they are both great cars.
For the OP, if you are in the mood for something bigger, more comfortable and with a sexy V8 rumble. Get the 928! Just remember its a GT car, not a sports car. This does not have to be your last Porsche purchase. Try it for awhile and if you don't like it shop for a 951.
If you love the way your 944 drives but just want a rush, butter suspension, brakes, get the 951. A few mild mods and you will never get bored with the push of the turbo.
Some days I'm in the mood for the 951 some days the 928S4 (and some days the pure velvet hammer violence of my modded CTT).
All great cars and you won't go wrong with either

the 928 has 100hp over that early 951; it should walk. A modded 951 will have obvious traction issues until 50mph, even in non turbo-S form as my last was quite a handful, but still very rewarding to drive & fun to pick on C5 corvettes.
My wife hated it (because it was ugly) until she raced a F348 one day: then it was ok
Well said Cole.

I've owned a 911SC Targa for 14 years and just got a 928 in January. Each has characteristics that I enjoy depending on my mood.
I've been a car guy all my life and enjoy and appreciate all aspects of performance. I'm not about to denigrate anybody's choice in vehicle.

But I will say the 951 didn't throw a cam gear and self-destruct the valves.

The 928 group is a great community that will always be there to help you when you need it. I get the impression that the 944/951 crowd is younger and more competitive with each other.
The 928 people are the best, and that should be a big factor. You are gaining a big extended family with a 928.
I think the build quality, engineering, and suspension of the 928 are big reasons we like them.
