Transmission Fluid Leak from Rear?
#31
Hmm. Ok, just got back up after looking around under the car a bit more. Bill Ball, I just looked and it appears there isn't a clamp on the hose that attaches to the top of the reservoir. It was tough to get and angle to look, but I'm 90% sure there isn't one there (at least not on the reservoir top). I could see pretty close to the top. I probably should have stuck a mirror up there to make sure, but it is 6am.
Yes, there had been fluid on the bottom of the reservoir. But there was fluid all under the trans pan too. I've seen drips on just about anything low. Like the knobbed reservoir connection (whitish plastic).
Last night no leaks though even though I refilled. I even have a little too much (just over max when the transmission was warm), so I actually need to syphon some out. Just ran out of time yesterday to finish the job then.
I looked farther up the fluid supply hose that has the red circle, more towards the front of the car and definitely see a good sized crack in that. Not sure if it was just some insulation around the hose though. It's near the body underside (I could get a pic if anyone wants). But it doesn't really seem to be leaking. Just a bit of fluid near where it is rubbing against the body of the car.
I did still have the old voicemail from the mechanic (nice to be able to keep voicemails from over a year old) and this is exactly what he said: "It wasn't nothing serious. I just tightened up the fill tube fitting that goes into the pan. Tightened up the pan. Tightened up the reservoir cap and topped it off with ATF and I haven't seen any leaks." Then he said he just let it sit overnight to make sure there wasn't any more leaks, which there wasn't.
Still very strange that the major leak seemed to happen when we got a BIG cold snap then very little to nothing since. Seems I have at the very least a few minor leaks. Not sure how concerned I should be about those. I'm almost tempted to take it to my local transmission shop and have them do a thorough check through. I hate to spend the cash, but something to consider, I guess. Then there is the issue of how much is it leaking while I'm actually driving. If it can cause a fire, that's definitely not something I want to mess with. Of course, all this ignores the couple of oil leaks I have at the front end of the car.

I didn't think that the leak in the back was the power steering. Same fluid, obviously, just not the source. One part of me things it's just a funny coincidence. Then the other part of me looks at the 25+ year old car and all the leaks it has under it and things if I parked it for a week with no spots underneath, that would be strange.
Yeah, the mechanic did used to own a shop in the pacific NW that specialized in Porsches. It was just a quick voicemail, so I'm sure he followed correct procedure. I'm not going to worry about tightening anything other than maybe the connections to the reservoir and the drain plug (at the correct foot pounds).
I've dried everything off and cleaned it up. Looked pretty good from the front and the back later. I actually put drip pans under it now instead of cardboard. Well, drip pans on top of cardboard. The cardboard was nice, but tough to tell what was actually leaking and how much of it.
How bad of a job is replacing the gasket around the transmission pan? I think I saw a write up of that in one of my many searches. Seemed like someone (maybe Dwayne) had something nice. I'm sure I could call Roger at 928sRUs and they have a kit or something. Add it to my list of to do's: fuel line replacement, check power steering lines, etc. On the ultimate wish list is the engine and oil pan. But that is probably a bit down the road. My skills and garage make those projects pretty dicey.

Trans Service Kit,4-sp
All vendors should have this.
