Default Length of pod bolts.

For anyone who has the pod out right now can you measure length of bolts for me. I need to know the overall length of the shorter allen head bolt that hold the Instument panel to the pod. Also if you could confirm that the longer one goes to the ignition side. If anyone has an extra shorter one that would be great too. I misplaced mine.

Are you talking about these? On my '90 S4, the four bolts (2 short, 2 medium length) hold the pod to the dash. The long bolt holds the left side of the instrument cluster to the pod.

  • Long bolt measures M6 × 1 × 95 mm (although WSM says 100 mm).
  • Medium bolts measure M6 × 1 × 50 mm.
  • Short bolts measure M6 × 1 × 18 mm.

The short bolts are closest to you as you sit in the driver's seat, i.e., toward the rear of the car.

I have the two shorter ones but mine are six sided head instead of allen. I also believe I have the meduim lenght one that goes to the side that secures the pod to the ignition. The one I need is the medim length one that goes through the rubber bushings holding the instrument panel on the non ignition side.

Here's a screen print. Believe you're talking about the 6 x 100. If they're not allen (cheese head--like Ed's picture), you're probably not the first person to be up in there.

So what I am missing is one of the 100mm. Does anyone have one they can send me. I know it is here but I might look for it for next 2 weeks and not find it. This pisses me off because I have doing a lot better about bagging and marking bolts over the last few years.

It's interesting that the "100 mm" socket head cap screw (lots of names for these ) measures 95 mm. I just measured it this morning, and I'm pretty sure mine is original (exact same finish as the others, same blue thread locker, etc.).

It's possible that a full 100 mm one might bottom out before securing the cluster. Nothing that a stack of washers wouldn't resolve, though.

BTW, do you have any Fastenal branches near you? SKU 0141717: M6-1.0 x 100mm CL 12.9 DIN 912 Zinc Socket Head Cap Screw
