Default fuel pump

I have a 82 928 just wondering if i should hear the pump prime when i turn the key on,reason is i have starting issues and if i put a little fuel in the intake she starts right up,also if i shut her off she starts back up only does it when it sits for a long while.

The pump runs when you engage the starter. Your check valve by the pump might not be holdong pressure. Or an injector leaks over time. Some late model V W s now run the pump when you open the drivers door just in case you are going to push the button to start the car.
Also your cold start injector or thermal time switch may not be doing their job. Which is to squirt fuel into the intake when the engine is cold.

On my 81 928S, the fuel pump runs very briefly when I turn the key to the On/Accesory position, before I turn it to engage the starter
