Default After warmup, crazy rattling coming from under center console.

1982 Auto

When cold, there is no rattle sound. After warmup, I get an intense rattle from under the center console. I fear I have a bad TT bearing. But from what I've read so far, a bad bearing gets worse with higher revs, whereas my sound quietens with higher revs.

It seems to correspond to RPM changes, but not directly proportional.

I once heard about a heat shield down there that can make some serious racket. I haven't had a chance to get under the car in a few weeks. I'm hoping it's something simple.

You can hear this rattle all the way around the car, even back by the rear muffler. It just started one day, during some very cold weather.

When the engine's cold, no rattle. Warmed up, sitting at a stoplight,....loud rattle, but I wouldn't say I can feel it, just hear it.

Thanx.

Symptoms sound very similar to my experience. Console rattle was non existent until warm up and was prominent when revving from 2500 to 3200 rpm. Higher rpms had rattle calm down.

Replaced MMs and rattle greatly reduced but still there. I ended up dropping exhaust for AT maintenance and observed several rub spots on forward heat shield where CATS were contacting. I ended up bending the shields slightly to minimize contact and the vibration noise was greatly reduced but not gone. Who knows what assorted POs did to make this happen. I also think refastening the exhaust system helped.

Additionally, the PO had apparently hit a curb twice with the right front wheel which caused a noticeable vibration at 45mph but also noticeable at lower speeds. I had the rim straightened and all rattles throughout the car were essentially gone except around 3K rpm. Vibration stuff is often counter intuitive but the reduction in wheel vibration greatly reduced the rattling of the car overall.

My AT mounts are collapsed(109K miles) and are my next project. I’m hoping this job will finally eliminate rattles once and for all but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Hope this helps and Good luck!

Yes, it helps a ****load. Thanks.

I do not want to tackle a TT job.
