Figured I would give and update.
The car has been put on the back burner for the time being. I have the opportunity to purchase a 2001 Suzuki Marauder 800 with 14k miles for $1800. I'm jumping on this offer as I have been wanting a bike for a while now. And it will give me something to keep me from rushing on the car.
I know I'm about $300-400 away from having all the parts to try to start the car. Now that I'm starting to have some time free up I'm going to start working on cleaning up the car a bit. Funds are tight atm so can't buy too much to help in cleaning so idk how much I can get done but I want to make some progress. I also need to get a good floor jack as the ones I have do not allow me to lift the car onto jack stands w/o using scissor jacks and I really do not like using those. And eve with those I cannot get it up past the lowest setting on the stands. So I need to purchase a good jack before I can get much more work done.

So I've been thinking. Since I have the engine drained of all fluids should I go ahead and get everything and do a timing belt/water pump job? I'm just leery of doing this w/o knowing if it will need more in depth work. Something tells me it wont but I just want to be cautious and not spend my money on things that might be more important.
I know the engine will crank over. I have not done a compression test. Should have done that before starting on all of this. Should I put oil in the car and do a compression test then if it turns out good go ahead and do the timing belt, water pump, oil pump seals and the whole works before seeing if she runs?

It's an '82. Even if the TB lets go, nothing would be damaged in your engine. Minimally, you would just have to put the cams back in the correct positions and install the new timing belt.
Now, in the real world, it would happen this way by the PO, but in OUR 928 world, you would want to rebuild your tensioner and probably replace your water pump WYAIT.
But at least you'll know it runs

Oh and I haven't forgotten you either. I'll be down to a meet this spring for sure. Whether in my car or not I don't know.

I plan on doing the whole tp/wp no matter what. Pretty much if it runs I'll want to tear it down and do it all. My main concern is the waste of coolant if I was to do this. I don't have a problem doing the labor. Would the car be fine with just some distilled water to see if she will run for like 5 min or so. Once started and maybe driven around the block to make sure the tranny works I would take everything apart for the tb/wp job and the water would be drained.

You oughta just get it running well. Then bring it down for a tech session which could be replacing water pump and timing belt one afternoon. Lots of experience down here for that and there's nothing like watching and helping do your first one.

Also went ahead and ordered all the water bridge seals and such since I'm in there already. And working on a quote for all the timing belt stuff.

Long overdue update
It seems that I don't know how to put the images where I want them in the post so they are all at the end.
Been a while since I have had time to even look at my car. Between doing a head gasket job on my grandmothers Ford Windstar, re-grouting her cabinets, and helping my mother rebuild her kitchen I have had little spare time. I am hoping this will change soon.
Anyways I was able to remove my fuel tank over the weekend and do a bit more inspecting on the car. Here is what I found. Plenty of pictures.
The fuel tank was worse than I thought. You can see the varnish running as I left it on it's end over night. I tried to remove the in-tank filter but it wouldn't budge and I was worried about stripping it. So I poured some sea foam into it and was planning to let it soak, but I forgot to cap the end! Wasted a full bottle on my driveway. Going to get some more items tonight to try and loosen it up. I saw the thread about using a hose clamp to help keep it from spinning. And adding PB blaster to the threads. Any other ideas??
Did some closer inspection of the timing belt and it looks like I will be needing a set of cam gears. These are pretty worn out! Knowing this I am shooting to get her running to make sure everything works and then will tear apart to replace the gears and TB/WP and add a Porkensioner.
I don't have any pictures of this part but the 14-pin connector is not too bad looking. I did see some corrosion on at lease 1 wire but none within the connector itself. It has the plastic covers on them so I believe this helped keep it out. I will look more into it later.
And here are some pictures of the interior. I have been meaning to take these but haven't had the time. I don't know if I have seen a car with this color combo before. I have done some looking but didn't find pictures. I plan on using the same colors when I redo the interior.
Also my rear hatch will not open. Wont open with key and will not open with battery in car. The keys I have will turn in the lock but feel like they are not catching on or are slipping past something. It is a PITA installing the battery from the front doors. Where can I start to get it open again?
All my pictures can be found in my Imgur album here: http://imgur.com/a/m9Kzf
