Has anyone replaced the silver heatshield material on their firewall ? I'm thinking while the engine is out.... If you have, what have you used? any pics?

In November 2011 the firewall insulation for 928 556 089 06 was backordered without any ETA but might (might!) still become available again. For an '85 you need '-03, dunno whether that might be available or not. Price was $180-ish, for that price I'd be hard-pressed to spend the time finding and fabricating something out of another appropriate material.

Thats crazy. For a piece of paper thin tin foil. I think I'll clean and polish mine up.

Isn't there a ton of hard to move stuff running right over the heat shield?

If I took off the factory install I would be looking at modern materials.

For the small rips I had in mine, I used aluminum tape to fix them. Just gave everything a good cleaning first....

Actually $180 seems like a bargain. Those heat shields are pretty sturdy.

Same here, used simple green and then foil tape. Although some of the stains just didn't come out. I was going to use some stuff I bought from JC Whitney, but it turned out to be more like a fabric--like you'd use as a hood liner, not the thick metal stuff like the origiinal.
