NEED CAM TOOLS - HELP
Hi. You don't need the special tools for taking the cams out. But it would really help if you become a member and then you can post in your signature what year car you have. Depending on the year, you don't need the factory tools or dial indicator to re-install them either. I just used Porken's 32vr to set my cam timing and that was the only special tool I needed.
I always use them, as do all of the folks that work on these cars that want to do it the correct way.
I assume you have a 32 valve car.
Thanks guys. My 928 is a 1985 32v.
Im sorry Jeff. I'm new to the site and learning my way around. Please don't yell at me again. I'm
very sensitive and may burst out crying......LOL

I echo Greg's advise.
I used them when I pulled MY'85 for a bad head gasket. Use the WSM for timing and do use a dial indicator when setting the cams. Use the PK 32vr to check and further dial in the cams.
You do run the risk of damaging the cams on removal and installation if you do not use the special tools

I echo Patrick's advice. 928 tools will come and go, but an STD contracted from a woman while you're drunk can last a lifetime
Seriously, Roger sells the PK 32vr; and if you're worried about the cost, you can sell it to me when you're done as i want one for my toolbox. Good luck and please post some progress pictures along the way.

Not an expert but - IIRC you need the tool (or at least the gauge) on the 85/86 32v cars to line up the cams as they have no "bumps" on them to know if they are in the correct position.
We have a complete set of the tools we lend out to customers for a $200 deposit and shipping.

I am looking to make a set of the Cam Removal tool 9248 out of wood since I have a full woodworking shop c/w CNC router, etc. Anybody have specs on size and shape of this tool so that I can make my own? I will be using it on an 89 S4 engine.
Heck if i have the proper specs and CAD drawings, I may be able to even make a few sets in aluminum if anybody is interested. From the photos i have seen, it looks i just need some 5/8" plate and some 1/4" plate.
