Default car start with a button click?

My buddy's got a new camaro and on his keys he can start the engine with a click, can you make a s4 do that?

You can - but why would you want to?

Turn the key to the run position and have a start buton to push to engage the starter.

Should be fairly simple to do, would need to isolate the starter wire from the ignition switch and wire it to the start button and us a switched 12 Vdc source on the other pin.

Haven't looked at the schematic so I could be wrong.

[old Luddite] When your friend with the Camaro loses his key fob and has to pay $X00 at the dealer for a new one programmed to the VIN of his car, and the local dealer doesn't happen to have the machine for cutting new Camaro keys, and he's SOL for a week 'till the new one comes in, you'll be glad that you have several keys that will reliably open and start your car... [/old Luddite]

I know, I know, 928 keys are hard to get cut, and not locally available, and ignition switches fail, but these electronic fobs just seem to be an answer to a question that no one really needed answered.

He means remote start (from a key fob).

Possible - but on a 928 the config is different than on many cars (disabling of many features during starting)... more complicated install - more relays - more liklihood of issues...

I know how to do this - but I wouldn't (especially not on a manual car!!)

Don't get me wrong - I think keyless entry is great and I have had it on my car for about 10 years, just not remote start

The 928 has enough electrical right now to keep my head spinning. I would not want to add anymore fail points.

I know that on the peninsula there the snow gets pretty deep. It would be handy to have the car melt its own way out. Or maybe just burn its way out of the summer morning fog.

Remote start is an interesting idea and certainly possible. Energize 15, strobe 50 until a tach signal indicates a few hundred RPM, and then energize X. Verify oil pressure, then almost good to go.

But... I listen to the engine for funny noises on start-up. Verify all the gauges even beyond oil pressure. My car lives in the garage, so I'd have to include a way to verify that the garage door is open before the car could be remotely started. Then verfiy that the car isn't burning the garage down and that none of my friendly neighbors is waiting to go for a drive when the garage goes up and the car starts on its own.

So I wander out and start the car when I want to go someplace.

---

Mark Anderson asked last week why I still use the key to unlock the door. So many keyless-entry options these days. So far, the only electrical 'gremlins' I've faced have been the AC compressor relay and the battery ground strap. Neither have stranded me.

Got a remote key and Start/Stop button installed in my 944. Works great. My prototyping guy down in Florida needed one night to install it. (In the photograph, you can see the Start/Stop button where the head unit was originally.)

Wanted the same system in my 928. My German mechanic had the car for four (4) months and couldn’t get it to work, but a few things that worked flawless before are now not working anymore!
