Default Temp Gauge and Volt Meter

On my 83 S, my temp gauge and volt meter work perfectly. Temp is perfect, voltage perfect, no lights. Then, after some intermittent period, the temp gauge goes haywire and pegs the top. The car is not overheating and, occasionally, it will register normal during the drive. The volt meter is the same way. Only with the volt meter, the red "!" comes on. It comes and goes.

The only contstant with these two issues is that they alway work perfectly after a good night's rest.

Is this heat related? It would seem that a short would be constant and not "care" if the car were warm or cold.

Thoughts? I know electrical gremlins can be the toughest. Again, there is no mechanical issue, just annoying that the gauges are intermittent.

Thanks!
