My 88SE had it - return to conventional functionality like ROW cars merely involves pulling the Dimdip controller box out of it's socket and changing the coding plug from IIRC pins 1-3 connected to pins 1-2 connected. If you just pull the coding plug as well the headlights rise when the light switch is turned to position 1 (parking lights or side lights) but don't illuinate until the light switch is turned to position 2.
I believe it went through to the end of 88 calendar year - my 89 has it (left the factory in Oct 88).

I like the dim-dip functionality - however my 89 has the coding plug changed, so that position 1 the driving lights come on, *and* the headlights come on low-voltage dim but remain down. IIRC for 89 UK cars, the dim-dip module is hiding behind the dead pedal (87/88 its stuffed behind the ECU's).

I just replaced my headlight relay as well with a new one from the porsche dealer. I have a euro 1984 s2 and the dealer showed me that the part number had indeed changed twice during history. It is now a plastic cover. Old one was aluminium. And no wiring diagram print on the outside.
But it does work exactly the same as my old one: when turning from dipped beam to city lights, the headlights stay up but with no light. When switching to fully off position, the headlights retract as they should.
Leo 1984 s2 euro 5 spd. Netherlands.

Most of the ones that come into my shop do this, and mine did it before I changed the relay.
I thought normal operation was for the lights to stay up but not lit when you remove the ignition key with the lights switched full on. - So you can clean the headlight bucket without flattening the battery.

As it should be, but many stay on with the buckets up, which I think is a sign of a faulty headlamp relay.
BTW, they are freaking proud of that relay.

Yes that is a fault - it should not work that way. For this case they should just stay up but off.

I just pulled the defrost relay on my 86.5 to avoid current drain...have one from an 88 on hand...same exact part number stamped on them...just different production date stamps-- and different pins/wiring on schematic.

Sean,
Checking with your VIN it is a USA/Canada car and no dim/dim option.
Is it possible the car went to the UK with Military personel and was modifed.
Send the relay back for a full credit and we will double check its operation here.
Roger
