If you do a search for my screen name you will notice I had the same thing happen a month ago. Too bad you tried to start the running engine. Just pull your sticking defrost *** out after you removed the key and the engine will stop. Try this first before you go for the relay. The defrost button should act like a doorbell button (pop out on it's own after you press it). If it doesn't pop out it will feed the circuit and keep the engine running.

If interior lights are on, turn on the radio, hold down both window switches, push in the defroster button -- engine will start right up. Not really, but after this if someone told me this with a straight face I'd believe them.

Exact same thing happened to me during the Christmas holiday! I was sorting out my electrical problems, testing and verifying what worked correctly and what doesn't. I pulled the fuel pump relay out with pliers (was in there good) to shut it off. Damaged the pump relay in the process because it was in it's terminal sockets so tight that the relay cover came off! So i got some rubber insulated pliers to pull it out. I should have just pulled out the fuse for it but... i was super freaked out by it cause something like that had never happened to me before.

I was super freaked out when it happened to me just as I arrived at work. Somehow, while holding the key in my hand while the engine continued to run, I calmed down enough to think "What did I do differently this morning?" (same as the OP). I remembered I'd used the defroster for the first time. I reached up and pulled out the defrost button and the engine stopped as if I'd turned it off with the key.

Vertex lists one for 85-89 $39, 92861520300
http://www.vertexauto.com/ShowItem/2...r%20Relay.aspx

I think I've also seen that part number as a ignition relay for 83/84, but not sure about it.

I also see this listed as rear defroster, 92861511500 and $200.

That's not a defroster relay. Might want to look at the one that is in your car, and compare it to the picture.

If anyone is interested, I have a schematic for the defroster circuit that I traced out and drew up using ExpressSCH, just need to make a few changes before it is complete.

Maybe its for a different model, or the front windshield defrost?

danglerb, I think you are correct, there is another relay referred to as XXII Defroster in the CE Panel. IIRC it is for the blower motor when the HVAC is set to defrost.

My relay is also removed because it was the cause of most of my battery drain. Is it possible to bypass the dual relay using. Is it possible to bypass the dual relay (using jumper cables) to energize a normal 4 or 5 pin relay for ONLY the function to energize the higher power de-icer mode?

It might be possible, although you would loose the self timer shut off facility.

John,
Can you rebuild them? I have collected a few.

Hi Roger, I've been tracing the circuit, identifying component specifications etc. I have one rather burned example that I am repairing. Then it will be tested.

It should be possible to repair most failures, although of course I have only seen one example. If successful I'll get in touch with you about your stock.

I'm not sure what triggers the failures of the relays yet. The one I have here has 4 components that have been destroyed. It would be very desirable to know what initiates this chain of destruction.

I'd be interested to see it, can you just post it here?

Alan
