Default What About Stickers in Engine Compartment

I am working a little on a project to help refresh some of the engine compartment and have found myself a little bit stumped about a couple of the stickers.

In my search I have discovered a miscellany of Shell Fuel/Lubricants Stickers totaling at least Five, not including some aftermarket replications that are similar to one degree or another to an original.

Of the various versions of the Shell Sticker, I think only two were ever used in the 928. The two that were used look very similar to each other, but they have subtle differences and different part numbers:
930.006.543.00; and
930.006.543.02.
(I had thought for a while that there was another like these two but with a number ending in ".03," but now I think I must have dreamed that.)

Neither of these two Stickers are apparently available from Porsche, but the one ending in ".00" is occasionally available after market, and is now on eBay from the UK. I have not yet carefully compared it to an original, but I think it is very close to exact. I don't think the ".02" version has ever been reproduced.

What I have found in respect to the 928 is that the ".00" version of the Shell Sticker was put on the top center of the Induction Airbox, just behind the engine, but I think only on the early cars that had the plastic cowl cover that covers only about 2/3 of the cowl area where the WSWipers and heater blower are located. I can't tell from my research just how late that short cowl cover was utilized.

When the plastic cowl cover was made to cover the entire area, or most of it, it has a sort of hump in the middle and the Shell Sticker was put on the hump and not on the airbox. Then I have seen that the Shell Sticker was put on the hump in roughly two different ways. One is with the Sticker partly on the front and partly on the top of the hump, and the other is with it completely on top. I think the former is most common; and I suspect the difference has to do simply with the worker who put it on at the factory.

Then, it appears that the ".02" version of the Shell Sticker may have come in with the GTS, but I can't tell for sure.

Therefore, in respect to the Shell Sticker, I would like any feedback from the Forum about when the Sticker moved from the airbox to the cowl cover, if there was any actual standards for placement on the cowl cover, fully or partly on top of the hump, and finally, just how early, or just when, the ".02" version was incorporated, if perhaps before the GTS cars.

Also, I am kind of curious if the ".01" version of the Shell Sticker was ever put on a 928. It is completely different from these other two I am discussing and has a large Porsche Crest on it. It is also about something like "Shell TMO."

I'll post my questions about another sticker in a later post.

Thanks for any input you might have. Pictures will also be very helpful.

Hi Jerry, I have a 1991S4 RHD ex Japan with the original cowl cover to the wiper motor and the Shell sticker is at the front middle of the cover and runs over the front edge. Mine is starting to get wavy so have just ordered a couple form an english aftermarket chap on ebay they are the 930.006.543.00 type and the supplier Ebay Member id isaydingdong.

I have been reading your thread on the rear fender liner reproduction and would be interested in a pair for my car when you finalise things
Cheers

Thanks everyone. This is just the exactly what I think I need. With enough of these kinds of responses I think I will be able to figure out the answers.

Hi Jerry - For my GTS, I bought these from the UK e-bay. Not an exact match, but damn close--Note that my original ended in xxx.02. Fastest delivery I've ever had with e-bay; received in 3 days. Now I'm futzing around with the door jam stickers and trying to make a replica of the VIN barcode--was reading Rob Edwards' 2007 post on stickers last night.

Jerry, here's a pic of my cowl cover with the Shell sticker. MY 85. (Note: the part no. on the pic is what's on the cowl cover not the sticker no.) I replaced the cover with one that's in better shape, but retained the Shell sticker. I will a get a better pic of it for you soon.

Thanks everyone for the continued input.

Rick, That sticker is one of the five or so that I had discovered in my search, but I had no previous indication that it was ever on a 928. I think it is odd how that one has the same part number as the other one that is most common, but that the one that is much more like the "00" sticker has the "02" number. Too, I wonder how prevalent that yellow version of the "00" sticker really was. I wonder if it warrents replicating, which is one thing I have in mind about these, maybe including the "02" version.

Rick, That Cowl cover is also a little different than most that I have seen. I wonder what years it actually applied to.

NOVECTOR, I saw that same or similar picture of your stickers on the post-a-picture-or-stay-out-thread, and it is the best representation I have seen of the "02" sticker since I don't have one myself. In fact, if I do replicate these stickers, or some of them, your same picture will likely be to model of the "02" sticker that I have to use.

Keep the pictures coming, if you will.

Thanks Wayne for the two eBay listing numbers. I looked at both of them.

I guess I am kind of an odd ball when it comes to replicating things for the 928 cars such as wheel well liners and essentially all of the other things I have made or am going to try to make, because I take a lot of license in terms of the design. I commonly redesign things from the originals to either make them better or because I have to adapt to my limited fabricating abilities.

However, in regard to these stickers I see a need to actually try to nearly exactly duplicate them. The ones shown in both of the two listing you gave are really pretty far from even any attempt to make them accurate. The Shell Sticker in particular bears only a vague similarity to any that I think were original. I think that might be true of at least one of the other stickers, the one about the Silicone Remover that also goes on the cowl cover. The rest I haven't studied yet.

Thanks for that input anyway. It is really nice to know what is actually ot there.

While we are into this sticker research, the other sticker that I am interested in now is the one that appears on at least some of the cowl covers that is black print on a yellow background and has to to with Achtung! Attention!, etc. and is about Silicone Remover with a factory part number. The sticker also has a part number.

What I am too slow to figure out is just what this sticker is about. I suppose if I knew what it was about I could figure out where or on which cars it might apply. In particular if it has to do with the high pressure Windshiled Washer bottle that might be why it is placed crossways very near the opening for it, and that might be the only cars it would apply to. There are not enough pictures available of the cowl cover that I have been able to find in my search to tell just where this sticker would apply.

Any additional help in this regard will also be very appreciated, because I intend to duplicate that sticker also and need to get an idea of how many to make in proportion to the Shell Sticker(s).

Thanks.

That sticker gives the info on the special fluid for the intensiver washer system. The system isn't higher pressure, it just uses special fluid that removes road film and silicone from the windshield better than the standard fluid.

Jerry-

Here are a bunch of pics of stickers and cowl covers. I will say that my collection of bits here really confuses me because the part # succession seems out of order, but I can't really vouch for each cover being original to the car (though I would bet 99+% that the 90GT's cover is original.

So-

My 90GT has a 928 574 553 05 cowl cover, with a 930 006 543 00 Shell sticker. The -05 cover has the 'ears' that extend in front of the opening for the wire harnesses, and a 928 701 153 03 intensive washer tank sticker.

That sticker is indeed for the intensive washer tank, which is supposed to be filled with Porsche's 'special' fluid:

My '93 GTS has what I would also be pretty sure is an original -06 cowl cover, with ears, but without the cutout for the intensive washers that all GTS's lack. But it still has an -00 Shell sticker:

But here's where it gets weird- I have the cowl cover from Hebert's '91 here, his car does have the intensive washer tank but his cover is an -06 cover, without ears or cutout, and it has an -02 Shell sticker. So either his cowl cover is a later replacement, or Porsche really had a lot of slop in their inventory after mid- 1990 or so.

Anyway, here are the covers and Shell stickers for comparison. As an aside I think the cowl cover would be a great repro product for you, they're fragile, expensive German plastic. Instant niche product!

EDIT: Wally, ya beat me to it!

Jerry, I can't say if the cowl cover or the Shell sticker is original for my MY 85. What is different with the cowl cover that I show in my picture compared to others you've seen? Bear in mind, the one shown is broken and not complete on the driver's side. (I'm sure you knew this)

I'm pretty sure that the one I have now is shaped the same as the one pictured.

Here's a pic of the engine bay of the 86.5 with 6k miles, from Philly shown here I think last year or so. The cowl looks the same as mine but the Shell sticker is different.
