Cool. Thanks for the input. I think I have enough to go on now.

I inherited a little of this from my Dad. I tested it on copper terminals severely corroded and oxi/crystalized by a long-term battery leak. I cleaned them a very little by scraping off most of
the big stuff and then used a little DeoxIT. When I came back in half an hour the terminals were sparkling clean.

I'm a believer. Comment, Alan?

Chris,

i did this process on my 79 a few years ago and used Dave's page as a guide. Its a great writeup for sure!!

I removed the panel and replaced every relay that I could actually order. Some where NLA if I remember correctly. I just used contact cleaner I found at Home depot along with very fine sandpaper and an old tooth brush to clean all the contacts for the fuses and the relays I reused. (IDEAL contact cleaner)
I also used a product called CRC precision lubricant which the label said was made for "enhancing electrical contact", and "plastic safe".

Again, Dave probably did a more thorough job, but I spent a whole lot of time on it and it cleaned up really well. I wasn't overly concerned with what I was using on it other than I wanted to make it pretty clean and make sure the CE panel wouldn't be a source of any electrical gremlins in the future. I would take Dave's lead on exactly the "best" product to use, but I'm pretty happy with the way mine came out.

It's time consuming, but a fun project. Good luck with it!

I have some Deoxit Gold G5 and have used it quite a lot - seems similar from the description. It is also good - Stabilant cleans in a very similar way. Both offer protection from further degradation.

DeOxIt is a miracle product. I spray it in all the switches on the 928. Fixes them right up and last for years. The only consideration is to let it dry 24 hours before applying electricity. I do not think I have had to replace any switches on any of my cars.

Good suggestions. I had not heard of DeOxit before but just did a quick Google search to learn about it. Looks like a very good product.

it's what I use too. I follow Dave's diy, and I've done several with good results.

When I did mine I used DeOxit Gold 5 for cleaning and then applied Stabilant prior to putting things back together to help achieve good long-term electrical connectivity and prevent corrosion. I also replaced every single fuse with new fuses and replaced all the cheaper relays. Some of the relays were expensive so those I just cleaned and replaced.

OK some answers lead to new quesitons.

Dan - I was thinking this same plan. Deoxit followed Stabilant. Except I had planned to use the Deoxit D series deoxidizer which is more aggressive than he 5% solution in the DeOxit Gold.

I see you and Alan both used the DeOxit Gold. Have others used the full strength D Series or is there a consensus that may be more overkill or too harsh for a CE panel and more suited to things like battery terminals?

Use the minimum you need to clean, don't go more aggressive than needed - this applies to everything, don't dissassemble what you don't need to, use minimal mechanical cleaning, don't go over aggresssive chemically.

However in this particular case I'm not sure it matters that much - just limit the time before drying, and do apply an appropriate protectant.

Alan
