Default where is the spring return in the ignition switch system

I have read and heard conflicting information on the function of the ignition switch.

Can anyone confirm where, if it exists, the spring return function from the start position to the run position resides. I have heard both in the key barrel and inside the electic switch part.

I recently replaced the electric ignition switch part and did not notice a spring function from the start detent back to the run detent.

My previous switch appeared to not return to the run position affecting the function of allot of electrical accessories. Not sure if that was a function of a spring return fault or just vague position detents or both.

Thanks

I'm thinking more of a cam design rather than an actual spring which may push the key back too far beyond the run position. But something must force it away from crank. Good question.

Fiat design, but may be similar.

I've just been through this on an 87 S4. The return spring (weak as it is) is located right beneath the aluminum plug in the steering rack adjacent to the ignition cylinder. I drilled out the end plug, removed the aluminum cap, stretched the existing spring, and reinstalled it. I placed the cover back on, and J.B. Welded it back in place. If I had to do it over again, I would have replaced it with a stronger spring, as I got little for my effort.

That is not the switch return spring. The spring to return from the start position is inside the electrical switch.

I strongly suggest that, wherever you get it, you buy only a genuine Porsche ignition switch. The cheap imports are junk.
