Default Oil Cooler Hose Cost

The good news and the bad news.

I just discovered from some new friends my 1983 5-speed, just purchased a week ago, has a new radiator. That's the good news.

The bad news is that the oil cooler hose was not reconnected.

In searching for new oil cooler hoses I learned they run in the $350 range from people I know and like. However, a Google search reveals a new oil cooler hose for only $180 from a Porsche parts supplier in CA. The part number is as follows: 928.107.037.05.

Any idea why the price difference?

Thanks.

How is it running without the cooler lines? Are they looped off?

Or is the new rad one intended for AT's and thy don't have the transmission cooler lines hooked up because they aren't there. My car, for example, has a couple of unused fittings on my C&R rad.

Good question! It is an AT radiator and, of course, there is nothing connected to an automatic transmission as mine is a five speed. According to my new 928 experts, however, there is another connection for an (engine) oil cooler hose, which is not connected (no hose). These folks believe the cooler hose is significant and recommended that it be replaced, hence my inquiry into oil cooler hoses. I was just surprised to see such a significant price difference (almost half).

Porsche listed price is appr. $340. Maybe the CA supplier needs to get rid of slow turnover inventory.

Rennlister GregBBRD makes replacement oil cooler lines, don´t know about the pricing though.

My 83 S AT Euro had both coolers connected from new , even though it was a UK spec car, unlikely to need a cooler for engine oil. I replaced all those hoses when I did the radiator (water inlet fitting broke off). One of the workshops here in Oz is very dismissive of the need for an engine oil cooler for normal road use - he cites the fact that you can give a SBC powered car a thrashing without the need for a cooler, so why does a 928 need one?
Anyway, when I replaced my hoses, I found the cost of having them rebuilt was not much different than genuine hoses, so I am surprised that you are seeing big $ here.

sounds like your mechanics have never had a hot SBC with a oil temp gauge.
Anything over 220 is cutting the life of the oil, anything over 240 is cause for action.

As suppliers we purchase our parts directly from Porsche or we buy from the manufacturer that supplies Porsche. In this case the part is only currently available to us by buying it from Porsche. Current price from us is circa $340. When it is available from the OEM we sell for circa $145. It will probably not be available from the OEM again as all wholesalers are showing zero stock.

The engine oil cooler was not used on USA 1980-1984 models. The then low highway speed limits 55 MPH made it unneeded as did the low power of the engines. Euro S cars with 300-310 hp and Autobahn speeds NEEDED it. Your "experts" need only know just a bit more than you to be "experts".

Just to add, IIRC you can add the oil cooler - you just need to remove the pressure sender and install the oil thermostat bypass (piston and 2 springs arrangement), and of course add the cooler lines to the radiator.
