Default 86.5-91 brake pads for Driver's Ed tracking - CHEAP!

For any of you who are doing track driving there is a superb "deal" on front brake pads on eBay. A set of front Mintex Racing Pads (NOT for street use) are at Buy It Now for $40 per set for the '86.5 - 91 models with free shipping! I have no affiliation with the seller.

I've used these pads, and they aren't quite as good as the Performance Friction 97 or 93 compounds that I like the best. BUT - those pads are in the $250 range per set, PLUS shipping. I purchased a set of these Mintex to use, knowing they'll probably be consumed in one season, where the PF pads will usually last 1 1/2 seasons. They will probably outlast a set of stock street pads by at least 2X and much less potential for fading.

Even though the Mintex pads aren't recommended for street, I did and will use them to drive to and from the tracks. I'm just careful to get them warm in the first mile or so after I leave home, or make a stop of any significant length.

Here's the link - don't know how many more sets they have available!

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to follow up with my recent experience with these pads.

First, thanks for the OP for posting.

I have an 86.5 928S that makes roughly 300whp that I took to California Speedway (infield course) this last Monday with PCA for a DE. The course is fairly heavy on braking with two heavy braking zones and not a lot of time to cool in between them.

I took off Potterfield RS4 and slapped these Mintex pads on to try them out. They are streetable, and do work when cold (well, California cold). I drove to the track without issue and took it easy my first two sessions to get comfortable with the car.

At 8/10ths, these brakes are just fine and when up to operating temp do the job for sure. However, during the 40 minute session near the end of the day (85 degress F) I was comfortable with the car and was dicing it up with some 911s. About 25 minutes into the session, the pedal started getting long and I had to start braking early to keep from going way too deep. Because the fluid boiled a bit, it's hard to say how well the pads were doing at that temp, but before the pedal started going long, there was some minor brake fade.

Conclusion: for a cheap set of pads, they did impress. I think with higher temp better brake fluid and better brake cooling, they could probably hold their own with much more expensive pads. The brake dust wasn't terrible, but they do seem to be wearing fairly quickly (I did get 140 minutes on track though).

If you just auto-x or don't push too hard at DEs, I would recommend them.
