Default what cats to buy

Ok, so i bought my car last year and it was a cat delete from florida.

I thought i would not need to get them on as we usually have a shop that really is not very thorough on the inspections..
Well that is not the case, and it looks like i am going to have to get cats to pass inspection, or at least something that appear to be cats.

I have the X pipe from roger for cat delete cars...

What are my options?

I bought mine from Roger last year--part of the high flow exhaust kit. They're the same that Carl has on his page (http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/..._converter.php ) My car's never been sniffed though, so I can't tell you if it would pass or not. Good luck!

I'd suggest finding a local that has a set of factory cats sitting around, toss those on for the inspection and then change it out again.

Those cats pictured in Bruces post are a very tight fit compared to what roger sells.

thanks guys.
i am not worried about it passing, as they do not have to test anything, just a visual to make sure they are in place.

Oh heck, take a couple coffee cans, let them rust a bit, wrap them around the pipes.

I just did this. I bought them from summitt racing. The ones I bought are the MagnaFlow brand. Be warned that the one they recommend to fit the 928 is not the correct one (Part Number 94008). Mine is a dual cat and this was suppossed to be a direct replacement. I didn't know this until I took it to get welded and it wouldn't fit. The exhaust guy recommended I purchase 2 single ones instead.

I can't remember those numbers right now, I'll post them up when I get home. They were relatively cheap, approximately $60.00 each.

Cost to weld them up was 30 bucks, so the total amount was $150.00.

Interestingly enough, I took my old cats to the local recycling yard last week and believe or not, but they paid me $156.00!

Ok - just got home. Here is the part number: MPE-53004. Quantity 2.

1st time ever I broke even on this car..

A Pair of High Flow Cats are $360. No measurable power loss when fitted to your existing X pipe.

What someone needs to do is build a CA certified high flow cat that fits into the same configuration as a cat bypass with versions for stock manifolds and msds headers.

Calif smog is wacky right now. Whatever that law was that went into effect a couple years ago changed the way CARB considers a cat, used to be by gross vehicle weight and very loose, lots of generic cats, now it looks like the cat has to be very close to the original factory cat. This makes little sense to me since cat technology has improved a bunch, but welcome to Calif.

Short version, I don't think a modern cat could be approved for use in Calif. Maybe as part of a larger emissions system, but that sounds like $$$.

I had the Dynacat pictured above on my VR4, worked fine in mass which has Cal standards...visual aside. Very compact, not sure of cell count may be 300?

For the 928, I don't think there is a particular concern aside from fitment. Rogers are sure to be compatable with the X-pipe, to be of good quality and to be backed if there is a problem.

When just having my Ott pipe fitted, I went with an instate fabricator (MBS) for 100 cpi units. I actually got them via their Ebay storefront. Seem to be doing fine, but not sure how the dimensions compare and I recommend going to the supplier to get something you know is suitable in terms of fitment and build quality- and its always good to support a supporter that facilitates development and availability of such things.

For Rennlisters in GA, my 87 is now exempt from the yearly emissions check. Also exempted if driven less than 1500 miles applies to any year I believe.
Mine always passed by wide margins with the stock cats.
