Should the voltmeter light come on......
when the key is in position 1 regardless if the exciter circuit is bad? I am trying to diagnose s charging issue and have read numerous threads here for testing the circuits. However, before I get into it, I noticed that my voltmeter light never comes on at all. Also, as my car started to die while driving it, it never came on so I suspect it is burnt. All other bulbs and idiot lights work. Is it easy to replace or do I have to pull the cluster?

The bulb should light with the key in position 2 along with the rest of the cluster warning lights.
You need to remove and then partially disassemble the cluster to get at the bulb. I actually broke the bulb on my US '84S by mistake while performing other repairs. But since the fuel gauge uses the same warning lamp/terminal configuration, I swapped it for the broken alt. one and it worked fine. Assuming the Euro cluster is built the same, this is an easy way to quickly replace a burnt out alt warning bulb.

I pulled the alternator to get tested because I was having a charging issue. The shop noticed that one of the connections to the regulator was very loose. I crimped the connector for a tighter connection. Put it all back together and everything works correct.
