Quirky Temp Gauge
Good evening,
1983 928 58,000 miles.
Anyone ever heard of a temp gauge that reads completely normal and then instantly pegs the high mark for no apparent reason? The car has been verified to be operating in the normal heat range during this occurrence. It is not the sending unit. Could it be a short or something in the pod?
Thanks,
Bradster928

Happened to my 83, check the multi connectors to the pod (they look like 32 pin ribbon connectors, like for computers, sorta). You can reach them from underneath the pod on either side of the turn signal stalk. Mine would do that and show low oil pressure until i wiggled the connector and then they displayed the correct info. I thought the car was overheating with no oil pressure - that was stressful . . . (ha).

The contact blades in the connectors onto the pod are quite soft, and its easy to get poor connections onto the copper traces on the mylar. I have been through this recently. Remove the connectors from underneath, and (battery disconnected) use a small screwdriver (jewellers, 1/32 dia) to put some more tension in the blades, and maybe try to clean the contact faces with deoxit, or a VERY fine file. My temp gauge used to jump 1/8" when I turned the side lights on, until I cleaned and re-tensioned them while i had the pod out recently. You can get some very strange behaviour if the ground contacts are dodgy - Right side pins 9 and 13 IIRC, if bad, will peg the fuel gauge when pod lights go on.

Thanks! My '84 does this exact thing. I need to pull the pod this year to do the standard odometer gear replacement anyway. Thanks for posting.
