I would leave it alone and IF you want a 5 speed then find a driver to play with.

Default Get her done!

You don’t own it because you consider selling it any time soon! You own it to enjoy

The biggest asset you have is your time; you’ll enjoy the challenge and time involved of doing it to be followed by the enjoyment of driving with the manual shifter (as you stated yourself)

I have owned many Porsches, 356, 911, 993 (all manuals) and only one automatic 928 before the current manual GTS when I sold the auto 928 I did have regrets of selling it but I also knew that if there would be another one it would be a manual shift.

When I grew up the norm for any sports car was to have a manual gearbox that’s how I learned to drive them and that to me is a large part of the driving experience I enjoy.

I enjoy doing my own maintenance to keep the car in good working order and driving it in a spirited sports car mode as much as I can the manual box is an essential part of that enjoyment for me

For me the value is in the joy it brings me in my life-time and as long as I’ve the ability I plan to enjoy it. When it comes to the 928 for me it’s not about the future of X or what others think its the joy I get in real time now.

So just do it!

Leave it as is, if you are not driving it a lot, why change it? If you want a 5-speed get ya one. That car of yours should stay as it is, just my opinion.

Was the show car a 5-speed?

That would answer the question, for me.

Stan
For a "typical" 88 automatic.....sure I would do it....

On yours....NO......its too nice and far too rare....... Given the silly low values of 928's I would just save a few more $$$$ and buy a 5 speed......yours is just too unique to alter......

Is there any documentation on your elfenbein 928 that makes it unique? if not, then likely it's just another uniquely colored 928. The value in it is probably more due to the excellent condition of the car and would be likely to attract folks due to this and the color and not it's link to the show car (because it is not the show car itself).

Question is...can you find another 5sp in similar condition?...you've got this one close to where you want... no point in hesitating to make it what you truly want (5sp)... so...if you intend on keeping this one.. I'd say do the conversion.... if you want to sell it as a unique 928 some point down the road...keep it clean and low mile.....and pick up a 5sp to "fix up to your level".

I don't understand why anyone modifies their cars.

In your case I would not do it. In regards to very unique cars like yours and my 90 Zycalmrot Metallik. Any changes made to these cars should be fully reversible or undetectable.

I'll bite. If you aren't planning on getting rid of the car I would do it as it's going to increase the enjoyability for YOU. I very much doubt you'll ever get rid of that car, and having seen this particular car in person I say there is NO WAY that anyone could say you "ruined" the car. It would no doubt be done to the extremely high level of detail and care that you do everything else.

If it ever did come down to you having to sell it, everyone here knows the car and would be hard pressed to legitimately say it devalued the car as it's been maintained and modified by an expert. I would argue that it would increase it's value considering well-maintained near perfect examples of S4 5-speeds are few and far between. This car would be one of them, modified or not.

Never! Not all deserve to be kept as is (mine surely doesn't) but that beauty of yours deserves to be kept as original as possible!

If you could go back in time and get in the original owners head, which box would you make him/her check on the order sheet?

It's your car do want ever you want. If someone wants to give you a premium for your rare car so you can buy a nice 5-speed give them the opportunity.

BTW Stan, the donor is a '90 GT so you have to consider the complications of the PSD. I was just up at Emanuel's and he's sure hoping you two can work out an arrangement.
