Does that lower gear require the same coating or condition as the upper cam gears?

See example here - the small green gear:

Randy,

I think the replacement oil pump gear is steel like the crank gear where the original was aluminum like the cam gears.

The steel gears can show wear though, so if you believe the coating will lengthen the life of the cam gears there's no reason not to coat the steel ones too if you ask me.

Thanks, Mike.

The reason I ask is that there is some surface rust on my oil pump gear after being in contact with fire extinguisher powder and the subsequent power washing.

Sounds like it is not a critical issue?

As part of the post-fire engine repairs, the timing belt will not be replaced as it was not affected, and also because it and the water pump were replaced less that a year ago.

Oh,where is Colin when you need him? I can and will tell you one way that the gears will last forever. used to run a shop that did hard coating on parts. It is expensive but its once, copy profile and size, grind to undersize (how much depends on material being put on and base material). grit blast (again depends on material),mask off areas not to be sprayed (before grit blast) and spray coat with a carbide alloy then grind down to original profile, size and go.

Thanks for all the answers. The left gear definitely has dished teeth, I can feel it pretty easily. I didn´t look into media blasting and recoating yet, as I wanted to know if it would make sense before looking around. As for measuring, I would know how to do that accurately given the size of the gears.
