Default How does cowl area drain?

Where does the driver's side cowl area drain? On the pass side, there is a flap in the firewall at the low spot, so water can drain out. But don't see a flap on the driver's side? There's kind of a well under the wiper motor but apparently water gets out of there somehow ...

I seem to recall when I had all the stuff out of there that it was just sloped.

Isn't it all one big trough?

There is always the auxiliary drain, over the CE panel.

That whole area is a design flaw, IMO. It's as if Porsche thought "Zis car vill never be left out under ze tree, so ze leaves vill never be und problem."
I took care to clean out that area well with a piece of vinyl tubing taped into a shop vac hose.

Typically it dumps right down over the most important electrical assembly in the car.

I recently gave that area a good cleaning out on the white 86.5. I ran a water house into it afterwards from the (U.S.) driver's side (left side of car), because I was wondering the same thing. It all simply ran down to the (U.S.) passenger side (right side of car) and exited out that flap, and then on down the engine side of the firewall. No standing water afterwards, so I concluded it was sloped towards the flap.

Tom ... I cleaned that area out on my GTS and examined that area that you're talking about, and everywhere else in the plenum, with an endoscope. The whole area drains to the flap on the passenger side. Interestingly, this is one area that is RHD and LHD mirrored .. that is, RHD is the mirror reverse of what you have, including the tissue paper plenum cover (LHD will not fit RHD).

Shop vac along with compressed air is the way to clean it out. While you're in there also pay attention to the areas under the back of the front fenders, as crap collects under there too, particularly under the drivers side (pass side is protected by a screen).

The screen was added in either 1988 or 1989 - my '89 has it, both the 87's didn't, and one was very end of MY87 production.

Yes ... the plenum on my 82 is different to the GTS in quite a few respects.

My '80 Euro does not have the screen, but maybe I'll look into adding something on both ends. Just finished cleaning and painting this area tonight.

Al .. Good idea, but make sure you make it removable so you can still clean any silt out.
