I will email him and see if I can get the VIN on it. Maybe another car for Jim Doerr!

I just did, but he seems apprehensive to share it. I just sent him another reply, we will see.

I'm done for a while.

They started to make the 928 in 1978 only 600 where made this is the FIRST one that was hand made , it's a pot of gold for somebody ho can restore it properly the project was started the car has very little rust 80% of the car's body is aluminum the motor is a 4.5L V8 manual 5 speed original paint motor works just need to change oil pump the job was started but no time to finish or to work on it . Build in West Germany imported to USA by owner end not by the dealer so it's all original end written in German end in m/h
THIS CAR IS UNIQUE THERE IS ONLY ONE # 1
Je parle francais
This is funny ****.
It's an earlier car, but not the first one. My guess is around #0500, based on some specific early details present and not present.

657th built out of 3860 for the 1978 model year from what I can tell. I let him know where it stands in the production for that year. Still an early VIN car but definitely not a pre-production model.

667th RoW 928 built. Probably built sometime in late August 1977.

US destined 928's were also being built at this time, so one cannot say this is absolutely the 667th built. More like the 800th (or thereabouts), worldwide.

Keep in mind, I'm just guessing... using these production calulations as a guide.

Anyone contact him? What did he say about the production data on his car?

He sent me a pic of the VIN plate. His father (who he says passed away in Afghanistan 10 yrs ago) told him the 928 01 in the first part of the VIN plate meant is was the first one. I personally don't know what the 01 means but I know it doesn't mean the first one! The front of the motor is apart by the sounds of it, said it ran OK but had low oil pressure so he was changing the oil pump. This one is a borderline parts car.

For reference:
Here's RoW #0579. Probably built in later July, early August 1977.
