Those are purdy, but at $1k ish... My sphincter puckers pretty damn tight!

I plan on doing a timing belt job this winter on my GT which has at least 30k miles on recoated cam gears. I will document any wear, but last I looked, they looked pretty good. Oh yeah cost to recoat was sub $100.

AO,
Is the coating available for everybody or just custom for you? I might be in need of cam gears or recoating.
Is it better to recoating before the teeth get damaged or all gears can be brought back?

I did not do the coating myself, but there are many threads on it. The coating used on my gears is PowerKote DFL-1. You can see a video on how it is applied below. Looks pretty easy.

Andrew,

I'm looking forward to seeing this. Do you have any pics of the pre-coated gears for comparison? Were they new at the time you had them coated?

I replaced mine about 30k ago as well with new uncoated ones and will also be doing the TB/WP this winter. I'll show whatever wear is on them as well for comparison.

I also have my old gears and you can see the coating is worn off in places but I think the gears themselves are still in good shape. I might go with the recoating if it looks like it will add some life.

No... These were old gears that had shiny spots on them. And this was when gears cost $300 or so for a pair (iirc). There are some old pics floating around on an old thread. I'll see if I can dig it up and link to it.

Cool, thanks. I'd like to see the difference. I'll do a search later if you can't find them.

Does anyone have any idea how long it takes for new gears to start losing their coating and getting 'shiny'?

Mike,
I have seen shiny gears 530 01 after only a few thousand miles because the belt was tight.
The old gears were very soft and only had a spray on wear coating.
The new mega expensive gears 530 04 are much better and made from harder material and also anodized and in theory should last a long time if all things are equal. Time will tell as they have only been available for about a year.

I dunno...that scares me. Media blasting a set of cams? Piston skirt? then using $9.99 external mix airbrush to apply it?

Cam sprockets i can perhaps see doing. Pistons..cams...bearings...noway.

Thanks Roger, I'm really curious to see how mine have fared. They (and the belt) were brand new just 4-5 years ago and I've got a bout 31k miles on them.
I also put a paint mark on my new WP pulley to see if it would spin at all. I'll report the results when I get in there in a couple of months.

Seriously. I thought the same thing. Cam gears? OK. Cam lobes? Weird, but maybe. Crank bearing????? Yikes!!!

MrLexse who did it for me took care of everything. The first set he tried to have acid dipped. This didn't react well with the magnesium in the gears. This was the result...

I don't have any before/after pics at my fingertips, but they do exist. Like I said, I've been running these for the past 4-5 years and must have at least 30k on them. Oh found pics.

Before:

After:

So far so good. BigDave also has a set on his car and has been running slightly longer than I have and may have more miles too.
