928s4 WINDOW ISSUE
Hello all,
As usual I have the strangest issues with my car. Starting yesterday morning, my drivers side window would not work. Drove to work 30 miles still nothing, passenger side works fine, all the time. On the way home, nice warm day, drivers window works fine. Then this morning again, it would not work, but by 1100 it works. I checked and cleaned fuse, was told relay would not cause this. The drivers window switch is pretty new. So what next?
Thanks for any input.

Could be the motor itself. Had one go bad suddenly on my '89 S4 as I was backing my car out of the garage to travel to Watkins Glen for a 2 day DE event. Thank goodness, it is relatively easy to replace just the motor (remove the door panel, use an allen wrench to get the two bolts out that mount the motor to the transmission - top and bottom of the motor). Might just be the brushes sticking (I found one of mine was quite short and stuck in it's mount). Fortunately, I had a spare driver's side motor, so was able to get it repaired and "off to the track" after about 2 1/2 hours of work - half of which was figuring out how to do it! Haven't tried to repair the old motor yet.
I was able to get to the event in time, and I would not have been allowed to drive with an inoperative window motor and the window in the up position!
Good luck,
Gary Knox

Welcome!
Window motors, esp driver's side can go with age, moisture etc. Mine did and I got a replacement for under $75. Remove the door panel and unbolt the motor/bracket and then remove to R&R the window motor.

What year is your car? That will help us determine if it is a failing motor, or if you have one of the other switches sticking, causing the controller to think one switch is in operation and keeping your window not to work.

Thanks for the replies. By the way its an 88 S4, although I only put down 928S4 in my topic header. It worked fine yesterday, I will check it again today and maybe start looking for a motor just in case.
Randy V not sure what you are talking about?
Thanks

Before I jumped into the motor I would double check the switch. I have a new switch and after a very short time it has started to go out. I find I have to push it pretty hard and then it works. I would not assume just because the switch is new it is ok. Also the switch is pretty easy to get to and check.

I have found where the consol will warp and not allow the switch to be depressed all the way. It is only a hair differace.
Try pushing extra hard on the switch next time it doesnt work... Dont break your console

I think the switch is a likely choice, as is a broken wire shortly after the point where the harness comes out of its sheathing and attaches to the door (under the door panel). The motor is a possibility too, but seems less likely to me.

Reporting back: All is working correctly, still not sure why it happened. I'm sure it will show itself again, when I go through a drive through or some other bad time. It happened for two days and just went away?
Thanks

What Randy V means is to start by reading the introduction of the FAQ, it tells you everything on how to post, how to ask questions and YOUR INFO - year of the car, mileage and location so these wonderful people would be able to pinpoint your problem better!
