Success on removal of the set screw!
Here's what worked for me (taking into close consideration what others have done before me - thanks to all for the tips). I sprayed it 1st with Liquid Wrench and waited a couple of hours. This didn't do anything, the set screw wouldn't budge.
Got out the propane torch and using an aluminum shield, gently heated the area in question and proceeded to back it out.
I was giddy with excitement!
This was easier than getting that damn boot off. I have now marked the location of the shifter linkage relative to the shift coupler with white paint. While that was drying, I removed the exhaust system in order to access the front shifter ball cup.
So, the question now remains - can I remove and replace the front shifter ball cup with the rear shift coupler disconnected, or do I need to connect it back up before moving forward?

Try swapping to a short shifter at the same time, it will blow your mind.
You should be able to do the front ball cup without the rear coupler in place.
Save tightening the front pinch bolt on the rear coupler for last, it allows the shifter to be aligned just right at the end.
