Default painting plastic engine bits

Has anyone painted their plastic oil filler? I know many have painted the aluminium cam belt covers, but hoe about the plastic centre cover?

Photos please, and experiences, how well did the paint old up? I have a used centre cover, when I started cleaning it, the paint fell off it.

I'd like to paint the filler at least.

H, Mine was painted in the past by the PO and it looks like crap. I am going to remove the paint and see what it looks like then and probably buy a billet one...

Good luck,

Thanks Frank. Yes I'm pretty confident I can paint it well but concerned paint will age poorly.

i would venture a guess that after the plastic has been in service and been exposed to oil the paint coating wont stick like it would to fresh plastic

I repainted an oil cap once to see how it would hold up to heat. So far so good. Prep work is everything as always.

I agree with Stan that prepping a used plastic one might be challenging to get the surface prepped. I think I'd get a metal filler neck and prep that, at least it could be baked out in a toaster oven before paint.

Well, I should point out that the paint on mine is old. Since the PO did it, I can't say about the prep either but I am un-impressed with the results.

There is a little talk about painting engine parts in this old thread (Powdercoating TB covers):

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...what-temp.html

I remember it from researching the silver car's history, and being surprised (pleasantly) to find that my PO had Powder Coated the metal cam covers (but not the center piece).

I havent doen the oil cap but have done all the belt covers. I used rustoleum black textured paint.

The key is the prep..wash with soap and water..degrease..then i used acetone on a rag and wiped it all down. Its been. heck, 6 years now? looks good still.
Pretty durable paint actually. My whole intake and SC manifold is painted with it.

Tony - I assume you just have to be careful and not use strong solvent to clean the engine from then-on? Photos?

"Key to clean engine is stop leaks first Gasshoppa!"

I clean mine now with an air hose and a damp rag.

Ill try to dig up some pics, but i think they are on an old external drive.

Rustoleum makes some industrial type spray paints that i have seen at Home depot...i bet they are more durable. I have a can of stainless steel on my shelf.

That looks nice!

Thanks Mon ... I plan on going with this colour on all my doable bits, and powdercoating where possible. Plastic ... well I wasn't able to PC it. Anyway that filler neck has always offended me. Now at least it will look nice. My gf says she can't tell they'renot stainless steel
