Dwayne's guide is priceless, but bear in mind the tutorial is done on a S4 which is fundamentally similar to the S3 gasket change procedure but differs in the details. Also remember it is much easier to replace the cam seals after removing the intake/etc. first. Removing and replacing the seals with the intake in place is quite doable; especially if you have small hands, an even disposition, and a loving wife

I did a write-up about my '85 top-end refresh a few years ago.

It's available for download here for a while (this free download site will only host it for a while before taking it down, if this link is no good by the time anyone in the future is searching, just send me a PM and I'll send it up again).

If you like it and feel it's worth a few bucks, please donate whatever you think it's worth to Rennwish.org.

I know you asked about just the cam covers and I'm afraid there's only a short mention of the cam covers, but hopefully it will help and give you an idea of what else you might want to do WYAIT.

Good luck.

do you have to remove the Thermostat housing to access the cam covers?

I don't understand your question. What are you calling the thermostat housing? Can you post a pic?

No, you don't need to mess with that.

No. You don't have to remove the water bridge.

Always use small tools on engine bolts that are 13mm or less. Don't use a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove or install valve covers or else you'll be back here asking us how to extract a broken valve cover bolt.
