Default Aftermarket Air Intake (tube/air filter) Options for 85/86 Cars?

I am sure it has been covered, but I am just checking on any new developments that may be out there: With airboxes and tubes crumbling and NLA from Porsche, what are the options a la S4+ type systems from 928 Specialists and 928srus for the 85/86 cars? Anyone have/working on a solution?

My airbox is being held together by epoxy and the tubes by electrical tape.

Roger from 928sRus was working on a version of his EIS system for the S3s, but I haven't heard anything on that in a while.

You could roll your own using the Kuhn CAI like I did...

His CAI filters are designed to work with the S4 upper fan shroud but can be modified pretty easily to work for the S3.

Thanks for the reply. Roger?

Mike, I love your intake set-up and PM'd Kuhn about it. He sort of rebuffed me on the notion of putting it on anything but a forced induction car and didn't seem too interested in selling me one.

Thanks Randy. That intake is a thing of beauty, but sadly not available for NA S3 cars AFAIK.

Michael,

If you need a good used 85-86 Upper(or lower) Airbox section without damage I came across a couple in my used stuff recently. Shoot me an email and I can take care of you if you want to keep it stock....for now. :-)

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks man. I have to admit I got really lucky when the Kuhn bits came up for sale used. They are pretty pricey and I think they make them one at a time (although I'm sure it's from a set of molds) and they are very expensive to do.

These are not the focus of their business and I think he pretty much designed it only because he needed something to work with his Turbo design, not expecting or wanting to do anything just for the NA crowd, for which it has no proven benefit except esthetics AFAIK.

I guess that just leaves Roger and his EIS. I'd suggest getting in touch with him and seeing how the S3 design is coming along.

Sorry but development of an intake for the earlier cars took a back seat to the 87 to 95 EIS. We have a real job keeping up with production - we ship about 10 a month on average.

I really do need to spend some time working on a replacement for the intake tubes. Big issues is where they neck down under the cross brace. You know it will not be easy as it would have been done already a long time ago.

Mike what did you do at that point with your set up?

I hope I did not sound negative about my contact with Kuhn Performance. He was very nice, but not really interested in the business at hand. Your explanation makes perfect sense as to why.

Thanks for the update Roger.

I love my model year given the early body style/32v motor, Porken, etc., but I can see some of the limitations of owning a car only made for two years early in my new ownership.

When I was headfirst into 944 ownership, I thought that 944S ownership would be difficult for the same reason--- cool car, but an odd bird for sure.

Reading the production numbers on Wiki 928 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_928 (not sure how correct they are), but they say out of 14,347, (count contains 2219 so called S3 US models made in 1985 model year and 877 1986 models made in early part of 1986 model year up to November 1985), I can understand the limitations of making money producing products for such a limited production run of cars. All of this makes Porken's contributions even more amazing.....

We have a prototype for a EIS, which we first fit up to an S3. The intake plenum were too wide, and fit was constrained. We'd since moved focus to the 80-84 US & 84-86 Euro. Development on that is static at the moment.

Search for the EIS thread, and skim back

What we learned re the S3 is it's doable but requires a very specific custom design, which there is no budget for.

For the tubes, get 3" brake duct. It takes high temps. Check Jegs or Summit or your favorite speed shop.

That 'neck down' is an issue. What I used is 3" black flex intake tube and at the point where it goes under the cross brace it has to be 'molded' so that it's not circular. It's more like cam shaped at that point, still the same cross section as the full 3", it's just not round at that point.

Looks like GlenL had the same idea. You have to remove the cross brace to install/remove rather than just slide it through like the stock tubes, but that's only 4 bolts.
