The wipers on my 1985 car have 5 distinct positions, each with a detent:

Very fast
Fast
Slow
Off
Intermittent


But my 84 cars and wife's 86 do not seem to have the "very fast" position, just slow and fast, along with off and intermittent.

Is my 85 unusual? Or am I missing something? What do your cars have?

My 87 has three speeds on the column and intermittent via a small dial in the upper right corner of the inst. panel.

My '88 and '89 both have the five detents that you mention:

From lowest to highest:
1 Intermittent
2 Off
3 Slow
4 Fast
5 Oh My God!! I'm doing 140 on the AutoBahn and it's raining!!!!!!

it was a change to the wiper motor in my 85 that added the very fast system iirc.
