I am interested in performance upgrade(s) for US 81 5 speed for under $500 to start. I'm listening and watching.

new plugs , wires, cap and rotor, check out throttle switches, adjust thottle cable, adjust mixture, and check advance and adjust ignition timing, new air filter, new fuel filter, check camshaft timing ..... You're done ! Next $500 would be MSDS headers but that makes it not pass smog in CA.

85 Euro is a pretty powerful 928 to start with.....the 81 USA is on the other end of the spectrum

The single best way to increase HP in ANY 928 is to open up the exhaust!!! Depending on your local smog laws, this can be easy or difficult......

this Bailey dude sometimes knows what he's talking about.

Get a euro back to like new condition first by replacing every electrical and wear item in the engine bay including injectors, coils, and MAF if they are 26 years old. Check the brains to see if they are correct versions and not phucked up from importation.

Throttle cable is big, when the gas is floored is the butterfly fully open? does it operate smoothly? adjust at firewall

Get on a dyno and check the exhaust mixture througout the rpm range. Probably running lean if like other Euro's. Mine required 2 RRFPR's to get right. (This should be done after any exhaust system changes)

Put on my exhaust, run a lot of techron thru the system, get a top synthetic oil. I don't know what Jim means by checking ignition timing, though.

Then you should have one of the most enjoyable, best sounding cars on the road especially if you have lsd. If you want more than this, which you won't be able to use on public roads anyway, it will take big bucks and lots of time see Greg from Australia.

Thanks gentlemen, Sounds like I should leave it alone and just drive it.

I will research these items for this next year;

"new plugs , wires, cap and rotor, check out throttle switches, adjust thottle cable, adjust mixture, and check advance and adjust ignition timing, new air filter, new fuel filter, check camshaft timing ..... You're done ! Next $500 would be MSDS headers but that makes it not pass smog in CA."

I am impressed with the amount of fun a 5 speed is in my local mountains. This car is already beyond my driving abilities at the moment.

Sounds like a awesome ride!

Ditto. Headers with free flowing exhaust.
Timing might be able to be advanced. I would tune on a dyno. Worth every0 penny.

The check ignition timing was for the USA 82 , the Euro is computer controlled spark. I am not sure if any chips have been made for the LH Euro cars....

Mr Speake has EPROM for LH cars. Buy rebuild MAF at the same time.

Clean all ground connections and get injectors into ultrasonic cleaning...

I've done all the above to my '85 Euro except checking exhaust on a dyno. It runs very strong. The only thing I can think of doing next year is an X-pipe in place of the factory front muffler and '85-86 factory headers. On the fence about that though.

The 16v Euros 84-86 respond well to an EZ-F performance chip. In stock form they have lots of margin on ignition timing, the same as the US 85/86 32v.

Mine is -84 S auto and it gave 230 RWHP/400 Nm from dyno. Spark plugs are not even coloured so going to do ultrasonic treatment for injectors. Car is stock but has JDS EPROM.

I'm going to install S3 exhaust manifolds next. Hope to see +250 RWHP after injector refresh and new manifolds.
