Major factors:
-Condition of purchased car.
The 928 is not usually a good candidate for a "fixer-upper". Interior and paint are BIG expense items. Very, very difficult to accurately judge what will be needed on other items.
-Necessary Maintenance.
Depends on P.O. Most cars need all fluids changed, many need timing belt.
-Necessary Repairs.
Depends upon P.O. Almost all will need lots of small electrical repairs, which may not be expensive at all. Almost all will need vacuum system repairs, which are not too expensive. Some S4's will need intake refresh, which can get expensive.
-Desired Upgrades.
Damned expensive.
-Dealer/Shop/DIY.
This is the biggest factor. Dealers are not usually knowledgeable on the 928, are very, very expensive. Good independent 928 shops are rare. The good ones are expensive, the bad ones are very, very, very expensive. DIY is the only way to go, unless you are wealthy, or are lucky enough to be near a good 928 shop.

Wally is right, interior exterior issues can get expensive quick. I was fortunate that the car was almost as new inside and outside and engine compartment was clean. My maintenance has all been mechanical and electrical to keep up with stuff.

I also have gotten into the dash to repair the HVAC relay and actuators ( myself) which saved $$ vs having an indy shop do the repair.

I really appreciate the responses folks! You have confirmed my feelings of the situation. I have passed this on to my friend who was thankful for the information. The 928 search/research is underway. I have also sent him here to read read read.

Cheers!

2009 i spent approx. $4000.00 on parts and some labor to bring the car back to its original condition and it has not let me down except once - flat tire. now i left with fuel hoses this year and coolant hoses, heater valve and reservoir next year beside the regular oil change and tune up. worth every penny and the time i put in and was fun.
