Default Color - Amazon Green

I have seen recently two GTS cars in Amazon Green on e-bay. Looking at the Porsche color code chart there seem to be three codes with the same color. On the color chart code 39A is listed as a pearl but the name on the sticker is listed as Amazon Green Metallic. Did Porsche offer both colors - pearl and not pearl on the 928?

Thanks

Mine is a 37Z which I always thought was Amazon Green Metallic, but I know a guy with same colour code who describes his as Amazon Green Pearl Effect so will be interesting to see what the official description was.

On the 928 Specialists charts they show 37Z and 39A as both Amazon Green Metallic, but there's a footnote to say 39A is water-based.

Mine states 39A on the sticker. The production/delivery date was 03 May 1991 on this Exclusive order car. The certificate of authenticity from PCNA states Amazon Green Metallic / N7N7.

Dan, those two GTSs from ebay are the same car. It appears owner sold it to a dealer who's cleaned it up a little bit and jacked the price up. Beautiful color combo IMHO.

There actually were two different amazon green GTSs on eBay over the last few weeks.

This one (1993 5M):

And this one (1994 AT):

Hey that first one seems to have same Classic Grey interior as mine (maybe the second one too). Looks beautiful and shows me what I need to do to sharpen appearance of my S4 - blacken/tyres and tidy up or perhaps replace front spoiler (it has some scrapes which I've painted over as best I can, but the mountings are loose on RHS at front of wheel well - could rep[air with washers perhaps but a new one would be fab)

Chuck, you're right about the two but the 5 speed was also for sale a couple weeks ago as well with a BIN of around $29,500 and an opening bid of about $26,500. Same issue then and now of the clear coat being buffed through on the hood.

AFAIK, the switch to water based paint began during the 1991 model year; the different paint codes should indicate which type of paint was used.

Nicole, really? Water-based paints began to be used in 1991?

Thank God I've got a 1990 then! :-)

Check me if I am wrong here - but is the difference between water base and chemical base paint the part that evaporates. Shouldn't what remains behind be basically the same material. With these new HVLP guns there is very little overspray or wasting of materials.

I havce never painted pearl before but I understand it is very difficult to match even when painting panels.

The Workshop Manual starts listing water based paints from 1991 on (Page 66-010). It shows two versions of Amazon Green: 37 Z and 39 A.

Both are listed as as "Amazon Green pearl effect". However, none has the asterisk for "Water-base paints".

From 1992 onwards, only 39 A is listed.
