The heater core plugs are just rubber nipples that come in a larger size. They worked perfect for blocking off those ports that had the plastic covers on them. Do you still have the original vacuum hoses? Looks like the fuel reg hose is the orginal.
I also replaced all my bosch plugs for fuel injectors and sensors with the ones from a 2.0 VW Jetta. They have quick release tabs on them and are also color coded blue for injectors and black for sensors. Plus they are made out of a lot better plastic.
Have you been able to jumper the temp 2 sensor plug? Mine was also cracked and the PO taped it to the sensor.

Don't feel too bad. I've owned my '87 since it was new and it remains a mystery car to me. Oh for the days when I drove a 1936 Oldsmobile coupe.

If you could post some pics of all that looks like on your car, please feel free. I order the plug and sensor, so that is arrive tomorrow... Here's not it not being the AFM, we will find out tomorrow...

Okay, I unpluged the Temp II Sensor, this is what I found....

The PO place a resistor in with the Temp II Sensor, why? What are your suggestions?

I belived I zeroed in on the problem...its got to be the "Temp II Sensor" ... I got the car to fire up, with sensor unpluged, once I pluged it back in, I got a non start..."Gotcha"...

I still would like some feedback on the best way to approach repairing the sensor cap, and what to do about that resistor...

Did you jumper the connector and then try to start it? I do know of folks that will put a resistor in there so it will always read a certain range and not adjust.

My skills under the hood are rather limited and embarssing at times, when you say jumper, I am not sure I did it right.

What I did was take a wire and jumped the temp two sensor and car started.

With jump wire removed I proceeded to start the car w/out the cap plugged into the sensor and it started.

Then I plugged the cap back into the sensor and made sure it was seated properly and I was able to repeat the problem, a no start...

Reading the other post it sounds like it is crossed some where down stream or the wrong connector is plugged into the wrong sensor. The car should die when temp 2 is unplugged. By jumpering I meant to put a piece of wire stripped at both ends into the connector were the sensor would have plugged. You shouldve had to do that before it would start. Try unplugging the sesnor in the front with the same connector on it and see if it wont start. If thats the case I would think they are plugged into the wrong sensors.

Okay, I jumpped the Temp II Sensor Cap, and I got a no start. Without the capped jumped, I got a start...

I have been bouncing between threads. That is very odd. i am thinking maybe the connectors are plugged into the wrong sensors. The one in the front of the temp 2 has the same plug. Mine has enough slack to reach either one.

The car was running fine before....what would prompt it act up now...
What failed?

We know the car will fire up....
The 928 will start up two different ways..
1) Running a hose down the AFM keeps the flap open and car starts (The Temp II is connected)
2) With the hose removed from the AFM, the car starts but with the Temp II Sensor disconnected...

We know it only fires up when the Cap to the Temp II Sesnor is removed...
We know the cap to the sensor is severly cracked...
We know a resistor was added to compenstate for other related issues...
We know the car was running fine without any issues before...

What will I do tomorrow...
I will replace the sensor and cap....should arrive tomorrow at noon but I have to work so I wont get to it until after

Could a rely be bad?

Yes, interchanging the two connectors and trying to fix the problem by adding a resistor is a long stretch of the imagination - but PO's do weird stuff!
it is possible to pull the harness such that you can interchange the two plugs - tell us what color the wires are going to the Temp II, and we can tell you if they are swapped or not. Unless I am mistaken, the two wires going to Temp Sensor II should be Blue/yellow stripe to terminal G, and Blue / green stripe to terminal W - but if you have not rewired anything, they should be correct. The other sensor has a brown and a yellow, IIRC.
