Default 1980 euro what's it worth?

I found a 1980 euro 5 spd with m28/11 for sale on craigs list for 2k. The add says it has two broken valve springs but it runs and drives. What do you guys think? No other info in the add. I did talk to the guy about two months ago about the car but at that time he said it wasn't the 310 hp engine so I didn't persue it, I guess he did finally find the engine code s now he's asking 2k instead of the original 16 hundred. Like a fool I mentioned where to find the engine numbers which he didn't know anything about at that time..

what would be enough info? nothing else mentioned in the ad and the guy is hard to get hold of. Just wondering if a euro is worth fixing . Seems to be a desirabl car from what I've seen on this site.

Two broken valve springs is very unusual. Its more likely that its a cracked or even broken cam nose on the 16V cars.

If its your first 928, run like hell and pay more for one thats in better condition, and runs well.

If you already know what you're getting into, beat him down to $1k and enjoy the journey of work and expenditure

Thanks hilton. I've been working on a 83 for a year or so and it's running really well. It was survivor so I know what to expect. The euro seller said he took it to a shop where they told him about the springs. I'd like to have the horse power but not to sure about getting parts to fix it. I've read some posts where valve springs (if thats what is really wrong) can be hard to come by. Thanks again.

Auto Atlanta has the full set of inner and outer springs for this engine for $40. Least of your problems when you consider the engine pull, heads rebuilt, seal kit etc that goes with replacing those valve springs. My original M28/11 engine had a piece of broken valve spring stuck in the piston ring land and ruined the cylinder wall. It's very doable and the price of 1k is what it's probably worth. It needs alot of money and work to make it right though. Could be fun and it's a great 928 combination that runs like a beast, extra fun w/ the 5 speed, lighter and easier to work on than the later cars. It has a totally different character than normal 928's in my opinion and it's worth bringing her back to life. Gunar

Thanks for the info gunar. How in the world could spring piece get from above the spring guide into the cylinder unless of course it was sucked up into the intake runner. Valve springs can be replaced w/o pulling the head. I've done it on 944 heads in the past

I guess strange things can happen in there. Here are some pictures of the damage. The piece of valve spring is laying in front of the damaged piston. Gunar

OUCH! That SUCKS!

If the paint and interior suck on the car it would cost a small fortune to get it right just from those things, then throw in the better part of an engine rebuild... Jeeze!

If you could hack the engine together decently enough and then pull the interior and wrap the exterior you might have a fun little track/street machine, but this is likely to be a HUGE project!
