I have often said that the 928 is the better car, while the 911 is the better Porsche - in the sense of customer expectations.
Ex Porsche CEO Peter Schutz writes in his book " " about the differences between the 911 and the 928, and how those were perceived by their customers. He praises the 928 as a great technological achievement etc. However, he says that Porsche customers expected a level of maneuverability that it didn't offer.
He uses an analogy with figure skaters - if a figure skater twirls with his arms out, he twirls slowly. As he moves the arms in, the speed of the twirl increases. With the 928s weight concentrated at the ends of the car, it lacked the maneuverability that Porsche customers expected from their cars.
He uses another example to illustrate the pride of the 911 owners: He says that planes with tailspin wheels are harder to land than those with the tripod wheel arrangement. When someone did a perfect landing of a plane with tailspin wheel, all eyes were on him when he got out of the plane. The same is true for 911 drivers, as it is considered an accomplishment to drive a 911 fast and well.

Very nice looking car.
If you get a PPI make sure they check the flex plate tension and check crank end play before you buy it. Thrust bearing failure is definitely a concern with the AT cars, particularly S4's.
Lots of posts here regarding the issue.

I drove a '05 911 on the open highway near home that I know very well......thought it was doing really well and fast until I looked at the speedo...........you do fell thta your going faster or the 928 makes the same speed so everyday.
2 different cars that have there own place......more urban or tracking may suit the 911s....longer trips Im keeping the 928 YMMV
On topic.....get the wheels off and up in the air; brakes suspension brgs leaks etc, underhood has been covered, interior/exterior youve covered if you buy it then the real fun begins.

How did this turn into another 911 comparo thread?
Let's see more pics of the shark if you have them. With your background, sounds like a no brainer to grab this car at this price.

I bought mine out of a pawn shop 3 years ago, and knew nothing about these cars, and I paid more for mine. At this price, you're getting a lot of car for the money. The rest is normal maintance. Everything you need to own and enjoy your shark is on this forum.
BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!
BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!

So the owner now wants to sell me the car for $6k as is. I fix the AC. I don't think he like the idea of me asking which shop is he taking the car to. Personally, I think he was going to throw a couple cans of freon and said it was fixed.

I paid $7K for an 89S4 on eBay eight months ago and it was definitely rougher than what you are considering. I was in love and thought the price was more than fair and fortunately lucky. I hadn’t worked on a car since high school and had minimal SAE tools and less mechanic experience.
Rennlist and members have been phenomenal. My shark is well on it’s way to health. Your past experience working on Porsche’s will be a leg up. Get a PPI and if it checks out...
Go for it! These members got your back.

Stay away from this car! Do not buy this CAR! Drop this car like a HOT POTATO!!!
Then, send me the location, the seller's name and telephone number so I can call him and tell him that I do not appreciate him taking undue advantage of one of our good Rennlisters.
A PM will do just fine.

You have to read between my lines.
The OP finds the deal of the decade and then wants to dick around with it over the AC or the timing belt.
If I knew where the car was I would probably try to buy it out from under him, as I suspect several others here might also.
The point is that he has been told several times in this thread to just buy the car. What is the delay all about???

I'm with everyone else. That's a good deal from what is mentioned. Heck I'd jump on it for that price! Even though it's an 87

I've had 80% or better luck in hunting down specific cars and sellers from casual descriptions in forums, and I suspect plenty are just as good at google detective work. If somebody that watches the forums was really in the market, it would already be gone.

Not dicking around Jerry, just minding my Ps and Qs. Don't want to purchase 3500lbs of useless sheetmetal. Not sure if you can consider a timing belt "dicking around" Can you image purchasing the car then spinning the belt on the way home? That "great deal" just turned into a dual head job, $$$.
Maybe you have never been burned by a "great deal".
