Default coolant disappearing

About once every 6 weeks I have to add coolant.
Not a lot, maybe about a pint.
I can't find any leaks. Something thirsty living in my engine bay?

I had this problem on the GTS. I don't know what the area around your water bridge looks like, but I believe the bridge is similar; I found fluid in two small wells formed near the bridge, I would sponge it up with paper towels and it would reappear 2 weeks later. There are two skinny gaskets + the thermostat seal. It's a common problem, there are threads on it here w/pics of the bridge. Most add gasket sealer and/or cut a gasket out of generic gasket material you can buy at auto supply shops; place sheet over the head, use a ball peen hammer to gently mark the material and cut with scissors. The channel around the outside of the two small seals is very narrow; I went with new gaskets and sealer and it has been good.

I had coolant disappearing on my 81.
After replacing the coolant tank, cap, all the rubber, it turned out that the head gasket was leaking on the top drivers side.
The coolant was leaking out of the head gasket along the head/block surface, then down the back of the engine and dripping onto the exhaust.
Since it was being burned away by the exhaust there were no traces, but I found white steaks along the exhaust and cat.
It got worse over time and began collecting in the engine valley.

I understand that the older 16v head gaskets were not made of the best material and eventually begin leaking.

Good Luck,

Had this problem of slow coolant leak.

Turned out to be a failure of the radiator side tank gasket - passenger side. Coolant escapes so slowly it does not show up under leak test or show a wet area.

Discovered when the gasket finally blew.

Replaced side tank and gasket with the 928 International kit and leak stopped.

Van:

I bought a cooling system pressure tester...took that to find my pesky "per tank of gas" add coolant leak.

Was never able to find it hot..it evaporated too fast..never saw anything wet/etc.

Put 16psi in the system...ya..now you hear it.

U can borrow mine, if you cant rent one/etc...

I'm doing the same thing tonight after work. Pressure test and see what is going on. Dam, seals only last 30 years.

Having driven in the Texas heat this summer, I was losing coolant, new thermostat, and lots of water later, I bought a new cap for the reservoir. Temp is cooler, and no loss of coolant.

Jim, that was my feeling too when I heard the comment. 20-30 years is a good life for a head gasket - what more could you ask?
However, this was a comment made to me by a well respected member of this forum and the 928 community.
The person felt that the original gaskets from the factory were flawed and that the "updated" ones were made of much better materials.

If my new ones last another 20 or 30 years - I'll be happy

Cheers,

Coolant pressure switch caused me trouble with a slow leak- another thing to check.

If the coolant leaks from the water bridge and pools in those handy recesses nearby, then often you get that tell tale sweet smell from the engine when hot.
