Anybody know of a good early 928 for sale?
Hey,
I am looking for an original early 928 in good drivable condition. I want to keep the limit at about 5500. I love the simple lines of the non s especially compared to my S4.
Any help you guys could offer would be appreciated. A 5 speed would be great!

My 79 has no problem going past a S4 auto and even edged out a GTS auto in a 60 to 130 race. Not once but twice.
Headers and cams really woke her up.
That stuff about S4's being so much faster is a JOKE!
Maybe the owner of the GTS had two wires pulled but I sure loved the look on his face when he couldn't go by me! Pricless!

My 243K mile 86.5 5-Speed is still available for $4500. It has been a reliable daily driver since 1999 and starts up every time. It is showing it's age, however, and several things should be attended to. Price is low so that someone will take it on as a project, and reap the benefits. All the details are in the Rennlist ad in my signature.

Cronin - Rich9928 has a very nice 79 spd for sale. red with black interior. Fresh paint and a whole bunch of work recently done. 56K original miles (yep - OG mileage)

It is showing it's age, however, and several things should be attended to. Price is low so that someone will take it on as a project, and reap the benefits. My 1982 928S needs too much work. With it being so old, it needs a lot of maintenance. I would need to pull the engine and replace the hoses, head gasket, radiator, water pump, timing belt, and those are just the things I have noticed so far.
I need new tires, new body paint, and a lot of interior... I figure i will put near $10,000 into it just for those few things.
Buying an old Porsche like these, even if it does run good, whatever you pay for it is only a down payment, because your going to be replacing a lot of old parts.
I think I will be parting my 82 out, unless someone wants to buy it as is and take on the task.

In agreement with most of what you say Jakkq, and I would add that daily drivers that have been well maintained (my for-sale white car for the most part, until recently, and, obviously, except for the interior) are what you want to look for.
These cars also don't like to sit, and sometimes are sitting because something was being put off that needed to get done. In my case, however, I lucked into another great 928 (silver stroker) that I could not pass up, and don't have the time or disposable income to attend to both cars. I am torn between selling it as-is vs. fixing all the little things (and doing the timing belt, just to be safe) to make this car look like the great car it is, only to turn around and sell it.
I am hoping someone with mechanical inclination, time, and some resources, will see the white car for the opportunity it is. It is an 86.5 5-speed for chrissakes!!! and the Dyno numbers beat many S4's! It was my Daily Driver for a solid eight years, where I fixed anything mechanical that came up, and several while-you-are-in-there's! It starts up EVERY time! I admit I never worried too much about the interior, however.
Anyway, I agree with you, the initial payment is simply a down payment for many of these cars, but there are exceptions, and they tend to depend on where the previous owner left off in maintenance and upkeep. I listed EVERYTHING wrong with my car, because I want the next owner to know exactly what they are getting into, and not get in over their head, and then let the car deteriorate beyond where most reasonable folks can bring it back.

Wow. You've had to atleast put a few thousand dollars into it? I am aching for a really nice 928 DD, but I figure I would need to get one that checks out very good, and whatever I do, pull and rebuild the engine.

There was a member's brown, sorted, Euro-S for sale here a couple of times. He was asking $5500 IIRC. I don't think it sold.
I thought it looked like a great car... and being a low-geared 300HP example, it would definitely have all 8 plug wires.
