Now I know this is just a dumb question, but if the holes are supposed to be plugged so oil does not get out of them, why are there holes there in the first place?

And Rob, thanks for the suggestions. I will check the condition of the chain tensioner and associated parts while I am in there.

Thanks to everyone for their input and assistance so far.

I wondered about this too. The contour and height of the plugs pins would allow no drainage ( I would imagine the poorly thought out rubber things were to do the same), so why have drains in the first place ?

In the S3, the cams had an end journal that extended into this bearing area; hence the oil feeds. They retained the same configuration during development of the S4 heads but ultimately shortened the cams and eliminated the end journal, so needed to plug those oil feeds from S4 on. Also, the S4 end bearings, although not used any more, are not in quite the same position as on the S3 heads, so if you install S3 cams in an S4 head, you need to cut off the camshaft end and plug the feeds or you will have a massive oil leak into the head from one fedd that is exposed. Look at the 3rd and 4th picture in this thread by Erkka.
