Default Timing Belt Party!!! Southern Maryland

Hey Gang..Shark is running sweet!!!! It has been intoxicating to drive this car!!!
All warnings addressed and the tree that hit my house during the hurricane was scared to look at the car!! So, as i was driving, the T/B light came on..It seemed to be consistent after about 40 minutes of driving..At first it was only after getting into it..now it will probably come on all the time..So, belt was inspected prior to purchase....but it was installed 3 years ago and then got stored for 2..It may be the tensioner but I am gonna do the deed....Looking for some players in Southern Maryland. I do not have a real garage yet...Just one of those 10x20 tented structures..It has served me well so far..I also have 15" full length ramps...

Looking for a Jedi to school me on this project..

thnx

Sounds like it just needs to be tensioned, probably never re-tensioned after replacement. The belt can be tensioned in a few hours worse case.

I have a tensioner and all the tools needed. You will need antifreeze.

I'm working on my 88 tomorrow trying to get ready for Boston next weekend.
Also working on the 87.

When did you want to do this?

What year is your S4?

PM me

Ok...Haven't got the parts or anything yet..I was seeing if there were locals that would be interested in this type of event..Kinda like an Amish Barn Raising.....

87 S4 Odometer inop..interviews place it at 150k..runs great..after warm up the tb light comes on..i have done lots of searching and realize this could be other things...but it has been at least 3 years since the last..maybe 6...it sat for about 2 years until i got it and put life into it...fuel lines, oil cooler lines, mice had chewed electrics...after i trace down most and repaired it runs great...I had belt inspected upon pre-purchase and it was deemed "OK" It wasn't the most thorough prepurchase and i took a big risk...but I believe it to have been a winner..i saved some money on the front end and put it right back into it..I am more pleased the more i dig into it...No electrical mods were done by previous owners and i was able to track down some of the history and feel that it was well maintained by the previous owners except the last one who had to store it because of personal reasons....It now has 2 very small leaks..oil pan gasket and a small one from P/S hose..i can definitely live with these for a while. as it leaves about a quarter sized stain on a paper towel over 2 days. I just feel that the T/B needs to be done as piece of mind..due to the vagueness of the last change, and i want to start this off on the right foot...right of passage too...
I have doc's for torgue tube rebuild and other things that are good to have had done recently...I was planning on an intake refresh in the fall/winter {i have the vac hose kit] but think this is what i need to make lights on dash be gone..not only from my line of sight but in my mind..

So far.....
seats reconditioned and new switches.
window motors froxen....took apart and got windows working..
all wires in and under center console were chewed thru and used as nests for 50000000 mice!!!
fuel lines replaced.
Oil cooler lines replaced.
thrust plate tension relieved and measured at 4 mm...of deflection...
cooling syst flushed....Gauge stays right in the middle.
Mobil 1
grounds cleaned
carpets redone
fiber boards on side panels redone
drivers side sound proofed.
A/C charged....did not dig into the system yet to do evap or o rings..next spring..
hood insulation.

I know there are tons of other things to do, but feel she is healthy enough to get this done next.

There is a shop near me that has done it before.....but i want to know this car for myself.

Any Takers???

thanks for reading.

John

Just the basics I know...i also have a 924S and am a fighter jet Mechanic so i know enough to know when to ask for some guidance..haha

I am expecting to have my garage built by middle of Nov...

Interested. Could just be your tension sensor, though.

I hope to be able to help out once I'm back in the area. Provide an extra set of hands, at least.

BTW- I went from a 87 924S to an 85 928S too. You shouldn't expect to be going back....that was 1994 or so..

I swap during the week between the 24, the 28, and my Suv....Probably selling the 924 soon tho.

Hi All.
Just a quick update..
Well Glenn M. saved the day!!!
Went over on Sunday after church..Listened to the Baltimore Ravens humiliate the steelers, and got schooled by Glenn
fixed TB issue...Was wayyy loose. refilled tensioner, changed out a bad coil wire, and sooo much else..

This is one of the big reasons that i risked getting into this car..To have a group of people that are so willing to help each other out is amazing..Makes owning this car so much more enjoyable!!

My hat is off to all of those who chime in to help a novice like me.
And the highest regards to people like Glen who will go far above and beyond to help someone..

You guys are awesome!!!!

John
