You can go with vinyl or leather, but you'll

- see the seams
- have to do dash and arm rests to match, or it will look incomplete.

Check out Rob Budd's work when you get a chance!

Ya..I was looking at his work..but for some reason, I was left with the conclusion that the leather consoles were "different" in how they were covered, and the vvinyl ones were just a glued on shell...thats how mine appears now.

And ya, Greg would do all my work once im there.

The clock trim is different and center vent as well because when Porsche wraped a dash or console they did it over a vinyl one. So the thickness of the leather needed a narrower insert.....

OHHH...ok..damn. I was not aware that under the cowhide, was good old plastic.

I'll be doing things in bits..console, then glove, the pod, then door arms as a pair...then find the guts to tear out the whole dash...or pay someone I trust to do it.

As it is..the dash cover that came up on the list a few mos ago I have now, and its really nice..it can cover the main dash for some time and Id be OK with that.

That was part of the reason why leather was so expensive...first you start with a perfect new vinyl dash cut it up a bit around the vent inserts trim each end by the doors then cover with leather. All custom hand work by skilled craftsmen.

** laughs again ** perfect vinyl dash? Jim have you stripped any leather dashes. The vinyl underneath will generally have some major flaws. My theory is the Porsche got a lot of defective dashes. Vinyl molding was still new in 1977. Instead of throwing them out they covered the bad ones in leather.

Of course the leather then shrunk while the car was under waranty so some Porsche dealerships replaced the leather dashes with vinyl ones.

Just buy a good used one. Same for the other interior pieces unless you going for full restoration.

Even if I go back vinyl...what I have now is really a hardened plastic dash look and feel.

I called Just Dashes today for a price on the dash and the pod. The dash is $1100 and the pod $750. For color add $100. Pricey but this is for a completely rebuilt dash which will probably last longer than the original.

Just dashes claims the texture matches the original and using the glove box cover and center console will match. The guy is getting back to me on a discount for multiple orders.

The clock/shifter trim piece seems to be molded foam underneath, correct?

Yes - but the one for leather is slightly smaller as noted. You could perhaps shave down the larger version, but risk exposing the foam...

I have personal experience with Just Dashes. While they may have a reputation within the industry, particularly with muscle cars, I was decidedly less than please with what I received from them, altho I haven't tried them for anything of German manufacture. I am all but positive you will be much happier with either Paul or Rob.

Ymmv!
