Default Headlight Relay Question

MY 87 S4. While sealing driver side bulb housing I inadvertently turned ignition switch ON while lights were up and switch in OFF position. The light retracted (with the bulb harness left out) interfering with motion. I freed it up, but damaged the relay. The relay removed was a 928.618.107.01 . Was replaced with a new 928.618.107.04 .
All works, but there is a difference. When lights are up (switch ON) and ignition OFF the headlights illuminate. With the '01' they were off. Is this the to be expected with an '04' relay ?
I ask this for I have a Gremlin which involves the light switch (see 'Tricky AC problem'). The AC relay shuts off when I turn the light switch on to position 1 or 2. I also note a significant draw when I turn the light switch on.
Thanks in advance.

No - this should not happen on any year.

I don't see why what you described would have damaged the original relay...

Alan,
Greetings. Quite a weekend in Canada !
Initially I thought I damaged a diode/switch in the motor. Removed, disassembled but all looked well. Nonetheless I 'shotgunned' it with a new motor. Did not work with the 01 - does work as described with the 04.

I believe it is a 928.624.023.00 - 180 degree bidirectional motion. I took the number from the one removed. They do appear to be identical. I really can't complain about its function. Is there anything particularly untoward about its function that I should be aware of ?

I do plan on going through the diagnostic algorithm with light switch on and off regarding the AC function, and will report.

What else have you done to the car - in terms of repairs etc...

Did it work perfectly before this? The motor sounds fine the earlier version is a different part#

The headlights worked perfectly until the motion stalling episode.

I now have the 'Maintenance / Preservation Log' in hand. Work by yours truly.
Porsche engine mounts, oil pan gasket 5/09, tappet chattering - replaced studded rubber disks (poor) with the pins, new cam seals (one was dribbling) 6/09, Intake Manifold removed - new injector gaskets, injectors cleaned, "V" well cleaned, new Knocks, oil breather hoses all replaced and protected, filler gasket, all vacuum lines dealt with, new TB (Porsche), rebuilt tensioner ( old one 'caught' and wouldn't adjust), new WP @ 98k miles, all accessory belts changed, new Bosch alternator (cover gasket degraded and internally filthy) 5/10, fluid drained from pan and torque converter, changed rear differential lubricant, new ignition coil cable, new spark plugs, rebuilt starter ( all from Intl), removed/inspected wiring harness from starter/alternator to front points ( including all wires in the looms) - serviced the 14 pin connector - reconnected and protected each and every small wire - large power cables replaced with larger cable and thermally environmentally protected (my bad with the recent wire issue in Canada) 6/10, turned 100k miles 8/12/10 - TB tension perfect and UNCHANGED. Other small stuff like dissecting window/roof switches and getting out the scalpel, removing and cleaning illumination rheostat (did make a noticeable difference), tightening front wheel bearings, new horns, etc..
Also, new AC antifreeze switch 8/10. Compressor engaged when bypassed. Now is good... except with the damn lights on !
Also, removed outside alarm system 8/10.
Also, ALL grounds inspected and cleaned/emoried 8/10.
Also, from the way the original/PO parked car, sun had caused the leather on the rear liner to retract AND bend the panel by the driver rear window. I partially removed it, installed metal 'L' brackets bent to suit. The panel is now straight, but the leather has a crease from its bend and tension. I have been applying good old saddlesoap to 'loosen up' the leather.
Took possession of car late fall of 08. Absolutely no driving up here until spring 09

An interesting finding on first nighttime drive is that now with the 04 relay as soon as you turn the switch to position 2 the lights illuminate WHILE they're coming up. I did not perceive this in the daylight. As well once they are up and you turn the switch to position 1 the lights remain up and illuminated. They retract and turn off fine when switched off. As I have a gremlin related to the light switch ( see my Tricky AC problem post) something is amiss, and I have yet to see it thru.
