Default Question on X-pipe install, Update-Xpipe installed

I purchased an X-pipe off of a fellow lister a couple of months ago. I am finally getting to where I am getting it installed. The X-pipe was still new in the box, never on a car. So, all of the clamps and hardware are new.

But, I don't have the fiberglass wrap needed to fill the gap where the pipes mate up. I checked the local auto parts store and I could only find the 1 inch header wrap, which does not look like it is what I need.

Does anyone here know exactly what product I need to track down, or a suitable substitution?

Thanks a bunch.

I was talking to a vendor in Texas today and they have an install kit that sounds like a good idea- packing, clamps, hardware, etc.
Short of that, I'm not sure where you would source such high temp material- a welding shop maybe?

Or a motorcycle shop apparently..though I don't know how the temps would compare given catalysts..

Thanks guys. I'll give Roger a call. I wish I would have checked this last week before I ordered a new O2 sensor for this very install from him.

If he is out of stock I'll follow that Mc Master link. If I have to do that, I should have plenty left over if anyone needs it, as the minimum order is 10 feet.

you should try to get the aluminum foil backed glass it will stay together far longer than the glass wrap supplied with the X pipe.
Go to Advance auto in their performance section they have it,
its about 14.00 and enough to do the job

Thanks to all who replied here. Since seeing posts that a few autoparts stores did carry this, I checked a few more local shops and found the cloth.

I have a bunch extra, so if anyone needs some I'm happy to send some your way.

Also, I did the install this weekend and took her out for a club drive with the local Porsche club, and wow is it loud.

I have an 87, so it has the larger mid resonators/mufflers, but I also have an RMB. The first thing I noticed was that the exhaust note at idle was lower, and a little louder.

But, as soon as you get above 2500 rpm it really starts to growl. At wide open throttle, going to red line, she just screams. It sounds great, but it sure draws attention. At some point I may consider putting the rear muffler back on to add a bit more stealth, while keeping the power that the xpipe gives. But for now I'm having some obnoxious fun with it.

All in all a very good weekend.

Sounds good. I'm all for obnoxious fun
I'm just getting ready to do exactly the same thing for my '88 S4. There is already a RMB installed, so I want to switch out the X pipe. I may give you a shout if I need some of the cloth!

How does it seem performance-wise now you have the pipe installed?

This is "Sans Cats", so yeah, the volume is pretty loud. My seat of the pants impression is that there is more at the top end. Not really noticing much more low end torque though. But, my ***-o-meter is not as finely callibrated as it could be.

No need for the wrap anymore with the latest clamps.

"latest clamps"? I will eventually remove my exhaust to inspect rear pinch bolt and hate the thought of replacing the wrap, what the lastest and greatest clamp?

928autobahndreamer,

I installed the x pipe on my 87 this past weekend. No cats, larger 87 resonators. However, I purchased a GT Muffler in place of the single tipped s4 muffler.

I can see where the RMB would be a little too much for me (and others) with the x pipe. I'm very very pleased with the exhaust note of my setup currently. It is unassuming at idle and pretty much up to 2500. When I take off on hard throttle, through the gears (yes, I shift my auto!) it sounds awesome. Very deep and mean flow.

After install and one day of use I noticed throttle response improved and a lot more power mid on up. Now, when the car shifts from first to second it breaks loose.

Roger,

I am insterested in an x-pipe, I too would like to know more about the new clamp.

One of the drawbacks of installing an x-pipe to me has been the fiberglass "patch" method of attachment. The idea that sometime, down the road, I would have to replace it because it doesnt hold up or the patch/wrap blows out.

The clamps are an improved version of the original clamps. They are already formed for the two different diameters and fit a lot better. They come with a small piece of wrap attached at the join.
