Default Used Tyres -- WTF!!!

Just browsing the classifieds here on RL ... What the hell People ... guys replace their dead, out-of-production tyres and then sell the old, worn, crusty ones on RL??? To boot, they often have almost no tread left.

This should not be allowed if you ask me. I've come to the realisation over the years that tyres are a consumptible .. if you don't replace them every 3 years and at the latest 5 years, you're not going to be nearly as safe in your Porsche as you should be.

Heinrich,

Hey, thanks for the reminder, I've got a pair of 205's that I need to get listed!

Seriously, I'm with you on this, and I've never understood why there is no enforcement of tire date-codes in this country.

I would agree that all tire ads should require pictures of the date codes on the tires being sold.

The only way selling old tires should be acceptable is if they're the original tires to a particular model and you want them for show purposes only. When the Risky Business generation hits 50, watch out- sets of Pirelli P7's like the ones that came on BlueMax will be worth a bunch more than they are today:

There are shops whose business is collecting old tires take offs...they then "match" them up to make sets of two or four which look alike. There is no way of knowing if the tires have hit big potholes or curbs and damaged the structure. At best used tires should only be used at moderate speeds and inspected often. And as pointed out if they are over 5 years old they are not much good at all. It is probably better to buy new cheap tires even lower speed rated than fit used tires.....

Good thing I wear out my rear tires so often, I only ever need to check the fronts.

I love the guys selling snow tires with "60% tread left" for 75% of the original price.

At 50% of the original depth they start to be really worthless as snow tires. So "60% tread left" would mean you have just enough tread to drive to the tire shop to buy new ones.

I've bought quite a few used tires over the years, no issues so I'll continue to do so.

Caveat Emptor, just like anything else you are looking to buy.

If you know what you are buying, there is nothing worng with used. The problem is, many have no idea what a date code is and how to read it.
