82 928 Gas Leak
Got myself a MAJOR gas leak forum. At $4.00 a gallon I need this fixed ASAP.
How hard do you think job will be? Will I need to drop the entire tank? Where do you think the leak is coming from? Have any of you tackeled this issue before?

If the tank is toast, is it repairable? Or do I have to search hi and low for a replacement one?
This dam Texas heat probably expanded my tank to the point it cRaCkED....your thoughts...

the left corner of the tank looks like it has been pushed in seen in the last seconds of the video, this may have cracked the tank internally

Sooner or later the plastic gas tanks ALL crack. The constant sloshing around of fuel flexes the tank and they crack....if they were metal they probably would rust... And no there is really no way to repair a crack and have it be as good as new.

Well looks like when I get home after work, I will be pulling the gas tank for further inspection. Heck I was thinking of puting JB Weld on the crack if that is the case....

Well forum after spending 12hrs on a HOT Sunday afternoon in my garage with the outside temp at 105
I dropped the tank and patched the leak.
What did I do? I bought "CarGO Plastic Tank Repair" Kit. You can pick it up at Autozone.
After spending $7.00 and 12 hours in the garage I found the leak, sanded the area a bit, made sure it was super duper clean. I applied the application with a "putty knife", put it all back together and top off the tank and BOOM, no more leak. Oh I took some black spray paint and touched it up and its like it never happened.
Here is the kicker, I didn't even need to drop the tank, the one and only leak was accessible and repairable right front from the bottom.

Hey risaac928,
I will be interested to see how your tank holds up. I had to replace the tank twice in six months in my 82. I hope it works out for you.
Did you happen to notice anything strange about the car on the day the tank popped? When it happened to me, the engine was hesitating like it wasn't getting enough fuel for a minute or so and then suddenly started working fine. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but its the only time my car has done that and the only time the tank ruptured. The first tank was broken when I bought the car. The original owner had it plastic welded twice and it didn't last.
Good luck with it. Keep us posted.

That's great. I really do hope it holds up for you. Please update this thread from time to time, so we can get an idea of how long this repair will hold.
Thanks,

There is a plastics welding company in Phoenix who did my Jeep tank. They will be doing my 928 tank soon. Mine has a small leak next to one of the cradle brackets that comes and goes as the temp changes. I think the name was Philips Plastics. They charged about $100. seems to be holding up well

Just be very careful about where you park your car because it is going to leak. I have seen many "patched" fuel tanks and they all looked like they were leaking. Epoxy does not bond well to the plastic tanks. The same sloshing and flexing that cracked the tank will crack the layer of epoxy.....just a matter of time.
