Sounds like you have 2 options:

1) spend $10,000 to end up with a car that's worth maybe $2,000 or
2) don't

Do you own it yet? If not, run away. There are thousands of other 928's to fall for. If you do own it, sell it. Plenty of running 928's for not a lot of money that will actually allow you to tell what else is wrong with it. A 20 year nap on a CIS car is going to be black death.

Going by the "resuscitate" it sounds like you're looking for a project car, in which case you've picked the right model

Whether the patient in question is worth it comes down to more fundamental questions, like how much do you want to spend, how much of the work can you do yourself, how much do you like working on cars, and how much does your partner not like you working on cars.

Interior can be re-done completely for around $10k. At the cheaper end, a complete used interior will work too. Or just work with what you've got and only replace what is necessary.

Paint is a big project and the cost in replacing the various seals, trim and other bits is $3k or so while you're at it.

Mechanicals can vary a lot - from your brief description, reckon on it needing at least $7k worth of parts.

Labor is the big unknown - if you're doing it for the fun of the project, then its free, just be prepared to spend many many hours at it

Personally, I require my 928's to be manual cars - but I know some here need to use auto, either for practical or religious reasons.

On a human you have mouth to mouth resuscitation, on a 928 you have wallet to toilet resuscitation.

If the paint and interior are bad, and it doesn't run, its time to recycle the metal. No money in parting it out, but it is educational and can be fun, and people do need some of the early parts even if only as cores.

OTOH if you are into it, dive in, and we can help you every step of the way. Post pictures, and add your location to your profile so you can find some local help.

Hilarious.

Take it slow, for small money and some sweat equity you will have a blast.

Start a thread with some good pictures and some specific questions and help will arrive. Lots in the archives here, already, too.

Common sense says run away, but I still have not done that after about 4 years of work on mine. I have an 82 I am working on that was in fairly rough shape when I first got it. Parts are really expensive sometimes and sometimes hard to find, and removing parts, nuts, bolts, screws etc. that have been in place for 30-odd years is something that is sometimes not very fun. It becomes an obesession though. If you like taking time to hunt down parts (or the best price for parts), looking on the web for how-to's and fixing things yourself then go for it. It is an unsual and awesome car. If you are going to have to pay someone to do the work for you, be prepared to spend lots and lots of money. I usually set goals for each year I own it, like this year is front suspension year. I am currently refurbing and modding the front suspension with a mix of stock and aftermarket specialty parts. Next year will be the rear suspension. Doing it that way makes it 'seem' to hurt less in the wallet area.

My rescue '79 sat only 11 years, has only 55K miles, pretty good interior (no cracks on dash/complete), is a 5 speed, had $4200 worth of work done on it prior to storage, and cost only half of Heinrick's $10K to get running properly. I have a '79 928 track car that provided many of the swap parts to figure out what was wrong.

One of the CIS injectors, the fuel distributor, WUR, and both fuel pumps had to be replaced. Oh, the radiator and fuel tank also had to be replaced. The CV boots were cracked and were replaced (and bearings repacked). In addition, all fluids changed, replaced clutch slave cylinder, full brake flush and a lot of corrosion cleaning at connectors.

So be prepared. I was hoping for some simple flush and clean, but it wasn't to be.

Warm Up Regulator. The CIS injection device that changes control pressure for cold-start management.

Actually does much more than that....it sets the mixture ALL THE TIME....it is the brains of a brainless injection system. Control pressure regulator being a more accurate name.

Reguarding the dead 928 it is best to DRIVE a car to determine if you like how it drives before spending time and money getting one running. So best to find a running early automatic for sale and take it for a drive.......then if you are happy with the performance decide how to proceed.
While the "$10,000 to have a $2,000 car" might seem unrealistic trust me it is REAL ! I know many who have spent far more on their addiction/hobby
