Jim,

Now find a prototype and we can reshoot the pictures for the "Project 928" book in modern day HD.

Sure hits home with me.

Wow! Congrats Jim (and Chris)! I see a good book written by the two of you: "The Search, Rescue and Resurrection of Historically Significant Porsche 928's"

Staying tuned.

I love how complete this car appears. The missing badging is in the glove compartment.
Despite the mangled fender, the bolt line and cross brace look straight and solid, and the headlight mechanism is straight, lights set correctly and functional by hand crank, making me think the damage was some sort of storage accident.

And the proud acquirer, finally ready for a cold one after a long few days...

The EPA testing lab is here in Ann Arbor. Back in mid/late 70s I was living in an apartment building not far from there, so I passed the building frequently.

One day as I was driving by a pair of 928s - one white, one red - came out of the facility and passed me going the opposite direction.

Now I wonder - were those 2 cars from that first run of 6? I'm not even sure of the year, so it might or might not have been the first year's production. But maybe.

I know I'd never seen a 928 before, and seeing them that day I decided right then and there that I wanted one. But it was 20 years before it actually happened.

(I think you had some coupons?)

Yeah. I especially liked when the owner, after we were loaded, and who had expressed concern of using craigslist in the first place, said something to the effect of " Chris, Jim, its a pleasure working with professionals".

I wonder if there are publicly accessible EPA files from 76/7?
Predigital, unfortunately. But there have to be more photos out there in dusty files.

Well, this one was almost as smooth as Charles' 78. But his already had air in the tires!

I'd have stayed for a beer, but knew I needed to extract myself prior to the return of the rest of Jim's family unit.

That is a hell of a lot of damage to that fender though. The PO didn't tell you guys what happened? I would love to know what could have done that. Gunar

I need to invite John Rettie (amazing photographer and blogger now for Road & Track) to see this link.

For his honeymoon he took out one of the press 928's. Talk about perfect planning!!

If the files survived, you can use FOIA to obtain them if they are not already public.

You know, it was a kind of a whirlwind situation. Some obvious questions just don't make it onto the table. There was talk of light damage repair to one side, some talk of the borla exhaust and wire coathanger he admitted to, some talk of two of the phonedials succumbing to a pothole during a commute and being replaced. Jim had the conversations and is putting it all together.

For me, it was sort of like, hey, that's a simple fix on the fender! Can the tires hold air? You want me to put my hand where? Are there any water moccasains or their skins? etc
